Thanks for building a Jimmy powered model a with an overdrive!
That is going to be one fun driving car.
There was a light blue 29 roadster that was in one of the old picture books,
that was the car I always wanted to build,
as I had a '53 suburban with a 6-cylinder and just loved the engine.
    Got into flatheads instead.

Cool to see the garage machine-work too!
A saginaw overdrive may have fit in there with the original bellhousing,
but the t-5 will be a blast to shift.
You'll probably be able to skip gears with all that torque!
    1-3-5!

Well done on the choice of project and powerplant.

I have a 29 coupe, and more than one Stovebolt 6 in the garage, and am going to re-chassis my coupe to one just like this.

Have to recess the firewall 5" in order to get the mill into the engine bay, but do not have to move the radiator forward. Jimmy's are 2" longer, so I guess your is about the same recess.

I'd be keen to see this car develop.

What about induction - I know where there is a 3 carb McGurk intake to suit a jimmy ;)

Travis - The roadster you refer to was in Andy Southard's hot rod in the 50's book. Vic kitchin (splg) has owned it for many years. It was pictured being dismantled in one of Mort's early Hop-Up annuals. Its now a pearl white Bonneville car, and has put Vic into the 2's club.

it was that car that got me into Model A's with inline sixes.

Thanks for the intrest. I'm doing the same thing on my firewall. I don't want to move the radiator much at all so I'm recessing the firewall.
I have a 2 pot McGurk for the small port 270 but my 302 is a large port and I very much want the 3 carb McGurk for it. Please pm me if it is for sale resonable.

I like your build so far. I've got a 31 in storage that I'm gathering parts for my build. I'm wondering if your brake master cylinder mount is strong enough. It may just be the pics I'm seeing though.

I used the Saginaw. A little cramped but the roll cage didn't help.

You and I have the same concern. I am going to weld Flatstock to the end of the master bracket to the end of the pedal assembly to tie it all together. That should make it much stronger. Also, its hard to tell in the pics, but the master bracket is 1/4" square tubing cut open. Under the master is not cut out, but angles to the tip of the bracket making it stronger than it looks as well. Thanks for insight, all ideas are welcome as I want this to safe.

Rich, you are a wealth of gmc knowledge. I would love to see pics of that car on the inside. I am worried my gas pedal is going to be in a very bad place on top of the trans hump. Also, I know you have some gmc speed parts to send me :D

Got all my brake lines run and my hydraulic hose made up for the clutch master to slave. Bled the clutch and it works great so I feel good about that.

more progress. Got my dashboard, time to cut it up. I think I took 3 inches off of the left side to center the guage and then 14 out of the center.

  13. Nice.. I wish mine was that far along. Your rear spring, was that the 38 inch with reverse eyes? I've been looking at that one for awhile but it hasn't had much feedback yet so I've been a little gun-shy about ordering it. Thanks

Yeah, that is the spring I used. I think I got the width that you spread it just right. I believe I posted my measurements in this thread somewhere.

  15. Thanks, i'll have to get mine ordered, been making a list of stuff I need. I'm hoping to make some decent progress this winter.

In 1958 a GMC 302 Wayne head roadster owned by Ike Iacono won more trophies at the LADS Drag Strip than any other single car. Ike's driving and the engine he had made a lot of other car builders and owners sit up and look hard. His car is now in the NHRA Museum in Pomona. Good luck with this project. The Glen Self Chevy 4200 inline six is now doing the same thing.

Great stuff. Good to see some one else using an old Jimmy.

My nephew and I own the cream T roadster #6 in the previous post.

When we started it we were told by all the 'experts' that six cylinders were a waste of time. It has been interesting proving them wrong.

    Nice build you got going.

Have fun. (I know you will)

The biggest improvement we saw on our #6 roadster was some head work we commissioned. 302 heads are pretty rare here, (NZ) in fact not many people even know they exist. So we machined 100thou (Ulp!) off the head, and a new set of sbc valves, and springs. we dropped a second & a half in the quarter mile right out of the box.

I took a bit of a hiatus on the coupe, but I'm back on it again. Bought a bead roller and modified it so I could finally get started on the floors. It is really tough to fit 3 pedals in this thing with the inline 6 recessed so far into the body. Anyway, here is the progress.

Digging up my old a model jimmy thread since I did some work to it the last couple weeks. Maybe I’ll stay motivated for a little while. Anyway, here is some exhaust I made for it off my Nicson headers on my built 302 sitting in it now. Also working on the oil filter mount and then mounting the radiator.

I’ve been working here and there on the old girl again. Was unhappy with the work I did on floors and firewall so I tore them out and started over. In progress still but I think I’m heading down a better path.
