just got this 39 mercury. my plans are to get it road worthy and just enjoy it. I think a guy with the last name newbill from socal owned it at some point . it also spent some time in north Dakota. I have most of the trim. just need the correct headlights , tail lights , and a ash tray. pulled the old seat covers off found this tag under the seat going to install all new brake components
Never could figure that out, lice swooping body lines and a soup can hanging off the side in the rear. I can just imagine the designers being told- hurry up we have to get this on the assembly line. Hey Fred that soup can from your lunch would work for a tail light.
Niiiice! I love cars that are uncommon and the fact that it is a more-door is icing on the cake! Long swooping lines and almost looks chopped, great project.
i have tried everything and cant get the rear drums off. glowing red drum, hydraulic puller, regular pullers , I even made my own puller. i bent the axle where it exits the drum with the hydraulic puller so I grinded the damn thing off. so being new to old mercury's, what do you know, this is a 2 year mercury only axle shaft . I'm also learning its very hard to find these drums . what would be the best way to go about this ? find original axles ? convert to something else that accepts the later hub and drums ? I'm not really sure what fits and what's available. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well you're doing it wrong and could bend your hubs or snap your drums. Pulling a wide five is a problem I admit. There are hub pullers which fasten around the ridge on the hub nose so it's more direct. Sent from my SM-G935F using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Now you've cut the axle the whole thing is junk anyway. My advice: convert to 1940 hubs and use Lincoln Bendix brakes all round with 1940 wheels. You can buy the 1940 wheels in many widths new. My advise woud be to head over to ford barn and ask the old timers what interchanges with merc. Maybe do some research first before tackling a project. Theres lots of weird litte things about old ford that you should know.
it seems like the best alternative is to change everything over to ford axles, that way you can find/buy the more easily obtained parts. On a side note, i bought an N.O.S. pair of those drums, & hubs at an auction a few years ago. I thought i did good. Seemed like i was going to have to give them away. I finally settled on an ebay sale for a little less than i had in to them
