VW had a bolt pattern that looked like Ford's from 36 to 40 but Ford wheels had a scalloped vent ring.
Any chance the bolt pattern was the same between the two?

 

Nope - VW is metric- 5x205 mm (just over 8")

 

The first pic looks like L.C. Kirby, out of Dallas in his Cadillac powered Bandini A/MSP
possibly at Cedar Hill Drag Strip south of Dallas. A well known car in the 60's.

That looks like Bill Scace from Chicago with his gull wing Mercedes in the ‘50’s at Bonneville. He later ran Corvettes there, I think the last one was a ‘67 big block car.

 

I haven't really seen either wheel in person and was only going off photos. They've always looked similar to me.

I just looked up the Ford's "Wide 5" wheels were on a whopping 10-1/2" spacing.

 

I can't say for sure. Kirby was a professional photographer(I was told) that lived in a expensive neighborhood south east of downtown Dallas(I visited there before). He was a regular competitor at
Green Valley Raceway in the 60's.
