Projects 1940 ford coupe build

    The EMS pan on my '40 does not fit the trunk lid at the back/bottom. That whole bottom edge where the seal is fastened needs to be cut loose & moved up at least 3/8".

    I have been thinking that I should probably order a seal and check things. Do you have pictures?

    I have the same issue. In fact I have two panels, one
    from Drake and one from Carpenter. They are identical
    and both have the same profile that does not match up
    on the left side.
     
  4. I have bought lot's of parts over the years from Carpenter and Drake. I've learned they market each other's parts in many cases. I would suspect the pan you got from Carpenter is actually a Drake part. Did the one from Carpenter have a label on top of a label?

    No labels. I think the parts are part of the Carpenter
    folks taking over the 40 sheet metal program from drake. The Carpenter web site indicates the 40 reproductions bodies are being discontinued. I think
    repo parts do still have a market but the complete
    body sales seem to have reached the saturation point.
    A sales guy from Drake told me they were out of the
    repo body program due to poor sales of complete
    units. Carpenter has it now, but they seem to be
    facing the same issues? I do not know the actual
    facts just what appears to an outside observer.

    I have a rusty original tool tray I can lend you to take templets from, it could make that part easer to make. I kept it to copy for future builds.

    I will not be running the rear bumper which makes the tool tray a little less complicated. Many times I have wished that I had a 1940 ford neighbor to measure from. I have been careful to take hints of rusty parts from one side and transfer that info to the other side.

    I think real deal steel, is selling the 40 body now, carpenter is out. I think the parts car is the best idea. I had a pile of rear fenders but sold them when I sold my last 40, now I wish I would have kept them. your making progress on your project!

    I wanted to finish this today BUT ran out of welding wire. Should be able to get the tool tray started this coming week. Going to fab one up. I know it won’t look like the original but I should be able to make something look nice.

My bead roller was not big enough. This air hammer tip comes in handy for forming metal. It also works great for reforming and stretching prefabricated patch panels.

    Going to build my own tool tray. After work I hung out and started bending some metal.

    Finished up the tin work on the tool box today and started welding. It’s nice to see the tail coming together. It was pretty ugly back there. This old thing is starting to look like a car again.

    I took her out for a round of sandblasting today. Things look better than I expected.

    The tool tray is a hard part to reproduce. I guess that’s why the reproduction people are so proud of them. Haha $$$$$

    here is a customers car with a ems panel installed on a 39/40 ford coupe, THE FIT IS CORRECT. and why is the only company to put a label with there name and phone is EMS AUTO?

  23. I gotta say in this photo the Fender to replacement pan looks as good as Factory. Can't wait to see it with the Deck lid in place and still in bare metal. Of all the replacement panels being made I would suspect that lower panel is probably the most difficult one to get right. Well done EMS.

    Taking a road trip this weekend to look at a 1940 four door. All original and never painted. My hopes are for a bunch of nice parts for the coupe.

    Redporch, your little car looks outstanding. What are you doing for driveline?

    While I am here, this is my '40 with an EMS panel, it fit perfectly.

    My '39 with the same panel took a little wiggle on the drivers side. Pretty sure it was the car that was dicked over, not the panel.

    Not sure on the driveline yet. I have a 331 hemi I’m thinking about using. Not sure.
     
  29. I find this a very common problem. A lot of so called bad fitting panels are actually due to the builder not bringing back to day one shape what ever they are working on before welding in a replacement part. I call that condition, built in damage.
