Technical What did you do today?

Went to a buds place who deals in 55-72 chevy truck parts and dug through his out buildings and semi trailers looking for short step side stuff. Came home with some nice bed side's, a tailgate , a rear panel and some nice steps + all the crossmembers etc. Good day in my book

 

Called the nursing clothing store in the big city to see if they had what she needs, and they did, now when I go there tomorrow for a buddys new deck party then I can pick them up for her.

 

Pulled the rear end to get ready for the upgrades, Moser nodular with billet aluminum support, 35 spline locker, 1350 yoke, new housing ends and switching to big drums....then sticky tires to actually feel some power instead of just blowing the tires off.

 

Got me a 49 Oldsmobile Club Coupe, wanted one for a long time

 

Today was motorcycle carburetor rebuild day.

Looks like its got some cool patina, with a little trim and doctoring up on the lower parts,
It could be cool as is if you like patina.

 

Working on my OT Hot Rod. Yesterday I replaced every bit of rubber hose in the fuel system, serviced the trans including adjusting the bands and finished up the ignition tune up with a new set of plug wires from Summit.

I ordered a ratcheting plug wire crimper along with the "universal" MOROSO wire set. They make perfect, factory quality crimps so easy, I wish I'd bought one years ago.

 

Finished up the Red Plexi Glass Sun Visors for the '41 Hot Rod...work well and have some Kool factor.

 

I've been working on the 54 Chevy 3100 pickup, putting a big block in it so I have to make room for the valve covers to come off where the firewall tucks under to the floor pans. I moved the distributor area back 2 inches and now I'm boxing in for the valve covers. Salt Flats is accused me of making paper dolls! However he did volunteer to bring his crayons over to make the clothes. LOL. Got it all tact in now I just need to finish welding it....
Got to keep Blazing away on this thing so I can get it on the road, can't get the 31 Chevy 5 Window Coupe out of my head!

Brought home a nice Bridgeport from a Navy friend who lives 9 hours away. And beat the rain home, which started a half hour after I backed the loaded trailer into the shop.

 

Went to the 50th CSRA Swap Meet in Bristol, threat of rain must have kept everyone away, didn't see ONE person I knew. Bob

 

I didn't do a thing on the projects or the shop but walked around a fun car show, visited with friends and took 344 photos most of which will never see the Hamb. It was a building enthusiasm day.

 

A bit more work on my 40, modifying the floor to get to the brake and clutch reservoirs, not quite finished, but it’s getting there

 

Frankly ....

What is better than helping deserving high school teenagers to complete school or higher education? This is the 26th year of sponsoring many scholarships for deserving students of the local Santa Ana, CA Community, in the middle of The OC.

“The tree-lined streets of the neighborhood capture the spirit of a simpler time from a bygone era. Once blanketed by Orange, Avocado, and Walnut groves, a few original farmhouses can still be seen throughout Floral Park, and the sweet smell of Orange blossoms still fills the air. Whether experiencing a stroll through the beautiful vintage homes and gardens, searching for antiques and collectibles on our Street of Treasures, viewing the classic automobile display, or enjoying a snack at the food and drink concessions, attendees will surely leave the Floral Park Home & Garden Tour with nostalgic memories of a day well spent.”

Last year, my wife and her sister went to this event, again. It was a historic tour of classic homes from years gone by in So Cal. The tree lined streets, the large and small historic homes in all stages of development, played a part of So Cal that was a bygone era. Some fortunate folks are still surrounded by this history. With the recent swing towards remodeling, these old homes large and small have been updated, yet remain in the classy styles of yesterday.

The wide streets (and narrow) were filled with couples strolling by looking at the open houses, the row of supporting vendors, food outlets, and music provided by one of the local Performing Arts High School vocalists. It was a Saturday/Sunday event that was a bright spot in Orange County history. (The great weekend weather was just in time, as the last two days have been raining. "April showers brings May flowers")

Who else was interested in this historic era gone by? Why our teenage granddaughter loved the hot rods and classic cars as well as the old homes that provided much of So Cal history. Plus, we old grandparents got to spend the weekend hanging out with her, like those “growing up sleepover days” from 1995- the current times.

To top off the displays that play into the historic homes, the sponsors invite old classic cars and hot rods from the era of the 30’s through the 60’s. The updated cars played their part to make us old guys feel a part of the historic home tour and display. Again, remembering all proceeds go toward the local school district that encompasses this historic area. As small as the hot rod/historic car displays were, it brought back memories for all those strolling by towards the classic homes on display.

These smaller car shows are much more relaxed than the 600 car, hot rod shows and a zillion people viewing them, that is for sure. Plus, the proceeds provide more educational opportunities for the local kids and teenagers.

 

Finish the installation of my new 355 gears.
Need to bleed the brakes and am ready for a 65 mph cruise.

Put a new shifter in my wife's Fairlane today. Not as easy as I thought it would be. She can take it for a drive tonight and take me out to dinner.

I pulled the '58 out of the garage so I had room to work on the '69. As I'm uncovering the car I look outside and it's raining.

I pulled the truck back in and wiped it down, then turned out the lights and went inside. Tomorrow's another day...

 

Put another starter in the sunliner and glad I had a spare in stock since the part store it came from does not have on in my area,I am also glad I had the receipt since Advance auto purged all the old records out of their system a few years ago and would be screwed. The starter I had was one of the slightly smaller late 80s version which was easier to install so I might see if they will replace it with one of those if they have one in stock.

 

On my lunch break I dissected an old 283 dampener, popped out the rivets , pulled it apart and cleaned it up on the lathe . Bored out the i d for a slip fit so I can use it for bolting on my degree wheel for cam set up Works perfectly with the plate I made on another lunch break that sandwich's on the front side of the degree wheel with an old 1/2"socket welded to it

 

Finally found the correct odd-ball rear wheel bearing for my 34 and had my local speed shop press the new one on. Put new rear brakes on and put the axle back in. Took the car for it's first cruise held by one of our local burger joints. Man! It felt great to drive my hot rod again!!! Beautiful weather this afternoon.

 

Got this in the garage. The fun begins soon. Build thread coming shortly.

 

Sanded on my '32 firewall, filled pinholes.

Dropped some more parts at the painter's shop. He was working on prepping wheels, brake rotors, firewall feet and a few other smaller parts going in color today.

Unboxed some parts that showed up. Front coilovers I'm going to try on my Industrial Chassis front cross member in my '62 unibody.

Stopped by a casino and donated to their bottom line.

All seemed like baby steps but at least they were all forward today!

Warm and sunny this afternoon sooo, time to get some of the cars out in the sun light. 1st one was the 69 442 convertible, surprise surprise pumped the throttle a few times and it fired right up and backed it out to the sun light. 2nd one was the 66 Shelby cobra(fake) same story pumped the throttle a few times and it roared to life drove it into the sun, 3rd is our 1930 model a phaeton, dead battery so fired up the 22hp riding lawn mower and pulled the A out and parked it close to an outlet to plug in and hook up battery charger. 4th, the 1908 Reo 2 cylinder roadster towed it out put a fresh battery in and it too fired up. Needed gas for the Model A so I put the gas can in the 2 cylinder Reo and drove a couple of miles to the Standard Station. Topped off the Reo and the gas can then back to the barn.

Finally the battery was charged in the A, and added some fresh gas and it too fired up. Drove it around the neighborhood and it ran like a top. This was the 1st time in 3 years it had even been started.

Tonight for dinner my wife drove the 442 top down and we went out for a nice meal some soft jazz. Then home. This group of cars are now ready for the summer challenges and rides. Next will be waking up those lazy Italian red cars on the other side of the car barn. They will require a bit more finesse and tinkering , but well worth the effort, loud and fast my kinda cars.

Yesterday was drink the drano day.....today while I was in a pleasant slumber, the doc checked out my insides. Said see ya in 5 years. Didn't even get a kiss.
