On Sunday, after Mass, my parents would go downtown to the Sears store on Soto St to do some shopping. Mom always wore a hat and gloves. Dad always wore a hat. Then on the way home to Whittier Blvd/Atlantic Blvd area, we would take in a movie at the Golden Gate theatre. Life was good.

  8. I used to go there a lot with my parents. It was the closest Sears to where we lived in Maywood at the time. My mom worked for and eventually retired from Sears. I never really liked their clothes and everything but the tools and sporting good were boring. Mom had a really good employee discount so everything was "Sears" at home.

It is said that the brewry made 1 hundred and 1 good beers and then bottled 102.. $1.25 a 6-pack of 16 oz talls.... Drank a lot of the that cheap s--t playing "captain puff" at the Zeta (ZTO) fraternity house when I went to El Camino JC in the early 60's....Damn I wish I could remember more about that time.

  15. I have ten years on you, and do not remember a 55-57 Ford. The five window was mine that I built there at my parents house. The three window was my friend Jim's who also lived in the Cove.

  18. I worked as a flunky at at a Pontiac/Buick dealership part time in 1959, and because of my interest in cars, I watched every car that came into the shop like a hawk. I don't recall ever seeing a single American Pontiac engine in a single Canadian Pontiac. I did see a couple of American Pontiacs, but they were apparently imported directly by the person that bought the car. I can't say for certain, but I believe the dealerships did not import American Pontiacs because of the substantial duty. The Canadian cars were expensive enough. Until after the auto pact in 1967, all vehicles sold in Canada sold for substantially more than the equivalent car sold for in the US.
I did see 55 through 59 GMC trucks with American engines, however, but again, I don't know if they were regular options in Canada or not.
To make things even more confusing, all Chevy Cameos, Corvettes, and GMC Safaris, were made in the US. My truck was made in Flint.

The '59 Pontiac El Catalina is a good looking car, still exists. It was in the AACA museum a few years ago.

I saw this vehicle being restored by a guy I was visiting in MA. He does fantastic work, and owned a fuel injected DeSoto Adventurer convertible and a large collection of other makes and models.
