Let's see what kinds of photos you guys can come up with of early Olds Rocket powered hot rods. I'm looking for cars that were actually built in the early 50's, not cars ones that were built recently in that style. I picked up a '31 coupe project a little while back that came with a 303 Olds, so I'm looking for some inspiration.

I tend to like 40's hot rods the best so the Olds is a bit of a departure from what I always envisioned building, but the practicality of it over a flathead changed my mind. It's mostly because the Olds is already rebuilt and running and the 59A out in the shed is not, (so calm down flathead guys).

I'd still like to stick to a very early 50's style for the coupe. The first Olds mention I found in Hot Rod Magazine was in the May '51 issue, in Dave Mitchell's pickup. I haven't found anything on the web about it though.

Looking forward to seeing what you guys can turn up.

Alright, thanks for getting things rolling FritzJr. That's a pretty radical ride for back in the day!

And on a side note here's the lot of Hot Rod magazines I just got today ranging from '49 to '51 that had that RPU photo in it. For $35 bucks for 14 issues on ebay I'm pretty happy.

  8. Good god how cool is that. I sure like the sound of a Cadillac OHV. Don't hear a lot of Olds' 'round here.

Any early 50's built cars out there? I know there wasn't exactly piles of Rocket's sitting around in junk yards at the time but I'm sure there was a few.

  15. Beach Boys & Capitol/ RCA? Records. Cal surf scene in these 2 pics. And look at the 'woodgrain' Laminex (?!) firewall, lakes headers & also the shine on those Halibrands. That had to be a beautiful car.
Wonder what colour it was. It would look great as a roadster pickup too.

  23. Sorry about the quality. I had to take a photo of a photo.

Joe Potter's A coupe on deuce rails in 2000. The car was parked for several years and is now being made road worthy again.

The red oxide 32 roadster sitting next to that A is also Olds Rocket powered. It has a 57/58 371 with 2x2's, it was built/belongs to revkev6 uncle. It is a Massachusetts car. I saw it at "Milltown #1" many years ago, and never since.

Here’s my Olds powered rod ..... Channeled 31A that was built in the mid 50’s I think and updated till late 50’s by the original builder .... 303 Olds (may be bored out), J2 intake and carbs, 37 Lasalle transmission, 56 Oldsmobile rear end.... Story goes two brothers from Philadelphia built matching cars, with the exception of the other brothers car having a Cadillac ohv.... This car was nicknamed “slingshot” or something.... Was told by the second owner that they did quite a bit of street racing. When the brother with this car got beat in the early 60’s by a “fuelie” vette, evidently he disassembled the car to upgrade, and never completed. The 2nd owner I got it from owned it over 25 years.... And was the one who told me the stories.

Would be neat to hear back from anyone who might know of this car.... Originally in Philadelphia, now it’s in NC. Here’s a few pics of it on the whitewalls when I first got it.... Definetely an “East Coast Style” built car.... Reversed rear rims, Ford F1 (I think) steering, Halibrand starter relocator lower bell housing, 40 juice brakes, 49 Merc steering wheel (?), 32 Ford grill, vintage gauges, original Olds valve covers, etc....

Here’s a few shots the day I got it or in the original specs of the second owner...
