The above post #392 , sorry I couldn't help myself. This slotcar box art means alot to me in my memory. My dad had passed away in October 1961 this set was given to me by my God Father that December Christmas. The first HO slots were AC vibrator motors as were mine.

    K.S. Pittman model Willys

    Hello,

I have been wanting to duplicate the finished Willys coupe that we would have completed by the Fall of 1960. I have searched high and low to come up with a base model with most of the stuff that we would have installed on our C/Gas 1940 Willys Coupe.
    upload_2018-9-28_4-47-5.png
The K.S. Pittman model was the closest finished kit that would be similar to what we had planned, but never got to finish. But, there was one glaring difference: His was a 1941 version with a one piece grille and our Willys Coupe was a 1940 model with a split grille.
    upload_2018-9-28_4-47-22.png upload_2018-9-28_5-16-23.png
Since no one makes a 40 Willys coupe kit with a split grille in plastic, it will be hard to duplicate the split grille to fit this 41 Willys plastic model. I am not in the market to buy a replica $40 1/18 scale model with the split grille as the it would not fit the 1/25 scale. There is a Monogram Model, but the split grille does not look right.

So, I found a resin infused model kit that has almost the exact copy of the split grille for a 1940 Willys coupe, sedan or pickup in the 1/25 scale. But, no other information was able to be gathered on that site, other than it is shown as is. This project may as well be a full custom as the split grille has to be made free hand.

I suppose that a single one piece 41 grille is a good starting point to experiment with a center bar and slits on an insert, painted silver. Those Tamiya body filler tubes will definitely get a work out to create a new molded, split grille to make a 1940 Willys coupe.

This would take a lot of planning and valuable time, so the box sits in the garage cabinet until the heavy rainy season rolls in to So Cal again. Ha Ha… But, the mind still works every time that garage cabinet is opened and the K.S. Pittman model stares me in the face. Split grille or not…

This may be of some help, so I thought I'd throw it your way. At a few of the NHRA races I've attended over the years, specifically the Gator-nationals in Gainesville, FL and the US Nats in Indy, their are quite a few K&S cars are on display. Have you ever been or seen them in person yourself? I'm sure there are some folks there with their cars that are really in the know about all the variants, real or in kits, or in the wide variety of diecasts that have been made over the years. Hey G,
Thanks for the tip. I have done some research over the years and always come up with some new information. Yes, I have followed K.S. Pittman in real life back from when he started drag racing at Lions Dragstrip. I have also followed the model kits that have come out to the general public, hoping to find a true 1940 Willys Coupe like our real life C/Gas Gas Coupe.

As it has been posted, our 1940 Willys had come to a tragic end in 1960, but we already had plans to finish the Gas Coupe for the Nationals that September. That was the version that I was looking to create for my bookshelf.

Thanks for the additional ideas and hopefully, I will find something to make the split grilles or just get into the whole body filler modifications to the popular 41 models.

  9. THANKS Jnaki, for another cool post. I was one of K.S. Pittman's biggest fans. I went to Indy in 89, to just see him. He and his crew autographed this picture. He was a very talented, and a very nice person! I'll add this AMT Vicky box art photo slso. It's one from my phone gallery, that I took for the vintage model cars thread, on the Antiquated form. Loved the 51 Fleetline kit which I found here in England in summer 1978. Chopped the top, pancaked the hood, small block Chevrolet from some other kit and did it grey primer then in light blue and extended the rear fenders. Gave it to a younger neighbour after a few years who now lives in the Houston area. That was a wonderful summer when i was on the verge of adulthood (16). Thank you to one and all on here for some terrific memories this evening. If anyone has for sale any Pyro kits particularly the 34 Ford Victoria which I could never locate I would be very interested.

    G'Day mate,
Did you ever find a solution to your 41 grill dilemma? It seems a lot to purchase the entire pickup for the grill, I may have an option for you.

What's so cool about the old box art was it fueled your imagination! A photo of a built model can't do that. The old AMT instruction sheets used to show "tips for advanced builders" where they showed kit bashing. That hooked me.

Perfect. Everything was still sealed in the clear plastic bag and the assembly sheet is even included. No damage to any of the parts.
I have already started building it, I may have left it in its unbuilt condition, but the box had a little damage, very little, and it had been opened. The parts bag was still sealed inside , but I don't collect for investment purposes, I like to play with my toy's or in this case build my models.
This kit has a very interesting instruction sheet.
I will post a picture of it when it's finished over in the model thread. 20190423_062130.jpeg 20190423_093427(0).jpeg 20190423_093507.jpeg 20190423_093536(0).jpeg

  26. That's too funny!
I thought it was a vintage kit by the looks of it.
I looked and Wierd-oh's are still available on Amazon.
