If that's correct, the heads should be centerbolt.

The heads appear to be '80-'85 ones. Roughly the same combustion chamber size as what is "supposed" to be on that block.

There is one page I found that does not show 416 heads for that block number. At least it's a whole 305.

It should be fine, barring any wear/damage.

    I'd run it.

UPDATE: The warm weather is finally here, and so this is what the $241 305 looks like now. It will be mated to the 700R4, and be in the frame of the '29 Stude this weekend. KIMG0001.jpg

  8. Little bit more that $241 into it now :p:D

Yeah, but when you start with a rebuilt long block for that much, this will still be the cheapest engine I ever put together!

I love 305 motors, never paid more than 50 for one and often find I can buy the 700r4 trans behind it for another 50.

  11. I had a pretty good running 305 in a mud truck when I was still in Mexico. Granted it was not stock but it pulled the old Silverado just fine I was happy with it.

Now to the question at hand, I may be suspect of a 350 dollar rebuilt 305 short block. That is pretty close to a set of gaskets and a paint job. I would look in the cylinders at the very least, if there is a ridge and no hatch marks in the cylinders I would guess that you are actually looking at just that a set of gaskets and a paint job.

The heads now are a different story. if you can verify that the heads have had a valve job I may use the heads. You can find good heads all the time in the 100-150 range.

Today it went into the '29 Stude chassis. The trans. will be painted orange to match. IMG_20190420_163844.jpg IMG_20190420_163815 (1).jpg 00000IMG_00000_BURST20190420163827410_COVER.jpg

It's a shade of light brown actually. I had it powder coated, and wanted to find an uncommon color.

    29 StudeDude,

Bought an '81 Chevy 1/2T pickup new that had the 305 with 4bbl auto w/ lockup conv.
It ran great and was really quite impressive powerwise. Had a cam go flat after a couple years, put in an RV cam and continued to be impressed with the 305.
Hope all goes as well with your combination.

We ran 305 sprint cars for a while. 550HP with a solid cam, RHS200 heads and flat top pistons. What's the problem? They react to bolt on stuff like any other engine does. Liked a roller cam and dry sump even more but that's a bit much for a street car.

It has a performance cam, but it was already installed, and the seller didn't have the specs. Thanks!

The rebuilt $260 700R4 I bought used with low miles has a lockup on it. I can't wait to see how it works with the performance cam. Thanks.
