Projects Gasser radius for a custom 56

im going to be converting my 56 210 Chevy to a traditional custom, louver hood, dropped, white walled supremes etc. Now my car currently has a large radius and I’m thinking of getting the original 56 opening and welding it in. But I figured maybe go with a gasser radius opening (mine is just cut with no lip) and use the same trim that goes on the fender on the back, connected to the door trim obviously. Instead of using the rear trim that drops down. I hope that make sense. Y’all think that would look good????? I think it would be cool to show off the wheels. I worry also about the fitment of the panels because the bottom edges of a 55 flare unlike the 56 that round out at the bottom.

 

I’d be welding in those patch panels..or sell it to someone that wants a gasser and buy a fresh canvas to start your custom

 

These are examples. I would have trim on the fender, door and quarter panel. The same trim on the quarter as the front. So one trim point forward and the other points to the rear. These are drawings.

 

Hmmm I don’t mind the top one..might be kind of cool...and hey your building a Kustom..so seems to fit the bill..

 

I'd go with '55 Nomad wheel openings..... same amount of work, and more 'custom' looking.

 

I hear that... big problem....nobody is gonna let me cut that quarter, if I even find it.

 

And they look to be the same gasser opening, not nomad

 

I have been looking for nomad quarters but even new they so expensive when I can get the original used much cheaper. The cost doesn’t make sense, tho I will agree that it looks better than the gasser

I know at one time somebody was reproducing just the wheel opening as a patch panel, maybe that's not true anymore...

 

Use wheel openings from some scrap front fenders. Been done many times to replicate Nomad openings.

 

Other direction. Re-build 1/4's around a set of 56 Caddy skirts?

I know I’m probably just stating the obvious but lowering a car with round wheel openings looks like shit.

31Vicky you did it again. Let the rebuttals begin, again. I agree with you. It's either a custom or a gasser. Not both. Lowered, wide whites and radiused wheel wells, I don't think so.

It's a modification and worth points in next seasons crazy 60's show car circuit.

How about cutting wheel opening patch panels out of a pair 56 front fenders.

 

I’m wondering how to use the front fenders, cuz they would be short in the front. So maybe the rear section of a left front fender is grafted onto a right fender? Or the fender Is just brought down lower to meet the edges?

 

Now that looks pretty good! I have to say I am really impressed

Correction, for a gasser, more specifically my gasser which I have always felt the wheel opening is too big. Personally wouldn’t use this on a lowered custom. I guess I’d have to see a picture from the old days of a custom 56 with a radius wheel opening to see how it would work.

How about '59-'61 Studebaker Lark?
A 2-door would provide more blending metal, but a 4-door would work, also. The rear quarters unbolt, so they're not difficult to find already off the car.

For those of you that think that a custom can't or shouldn't have radiused wheel openings.
A lot of what you do depends on what era of custom look you are going for. If that matters to you.

Sell the gasser and buy a nice stocker to build into a custom. NOTHING from a gasser will stay in place for a custom. Just because you have it doesn't mean it's cheaper and/or easier to use it. Let it fund the new direction.
