Hot Rods M/T valve covers seem kinda cool again.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rocky, Apr 13, 2019.

  1. Always liked them, never went out of style for me......

  2. 1980-had a nice set of what I think were Cal-Custom finned covers on my SBF '63 square-roof Galaxie 500 HT. Guy in my small town left car outside shop while working on replacing blown 260 with a '67 289 and some ass-hat stole them. Guy replaced them with finned M/T covers. Didn't like the looks of them but needed for oil fill since we couldn't use the 260 front cover with oil filler neck on the newer 289. Car left me in '91 with the M/T covers - rather wanted finned Cobra ones but put them on my '55 Vicky with a 289 instead (and still on today)

I got these on Ebay, bought them at a decent price because they were the powder coated black ones. A friend that does powder coating has a barrel of stuff that strips it off, after bead blasting they look pretty good.

There's way more to M/T's than you'd think. I've had a few sets through the years and had the opportunity to document MT oddities and differences.
Think all BBC M/T's are the same?

My set is even different from the one you are showing. The M/T was machined off for my breather as was the droppers on the inside. Vintage 1969-71, I think. PB131340.JPG PB131340.JPG

Valve covers definitely are an application that could cross over from speed to street. The headlight stands are unique though and probably pre ‘64 (if not earlier) with the Thompson name instead of M/T. For such a hard core racer I’m surprised Mickey made street stuff at the beginning of his enterprises.

The first BBC covers had the bowtie with "Chevrolet" in it on the knockout. Trademark infringement, blah blah blah, "Chevrolet" in a rectangle.

  17. Well ya know those are kinda rare, early and some people look for them unmodified, now don't get me wrong I've put breathers on early vette covers but there's way more of those than the early Micky's.

SBC, but there were a LOT variations through the years with varying clearance.

  19. I had them on cars that I bought just to re sell, never really liked the big flat spot under the M/T. Also a lot of the ones I used to see in the 90's where painted with the crinkle paint.

Not a mystery at all, they’re not M/T valve covers, they’re knockoffs that they can point to and say “see they’re different, we didn’t copy your product “.:D

This thread is sort of strange in that I don’t think M/T valve covers ever really were cool.

The differing styles belong to different era's. Maybe not the HAMB accepted one perhaps, but the look fits certain cars.
