Technical Let's See How You Mounted a Fire Extinguisher In Your Car

There's a lot of fire extinguisher threads in the archive, but most of them are pretty old, and there's not much in the way of photos showing ideas of how they are mounted. If you have one mounted in your rod please take a pic and post it here, along with any information about it that you care to share. I'm sure someone your info will help somebody, like me!

I'd like to see a good idea for mounting one in my '55 Chevy truck. Mine is a bit larger Halon one I used to have in an OT car. Larger diameter than the one above^^^

I mounted one upright on the right side kick panel, just in front of the door opening.

On another late 50s truck with an aftermarket floor shifter, I mounted the extinguisher just to the right of the shifter, laying on the floor.

I've been carrying extinguishers in most of mine for the past ten years or so, but I've still never had to use one. I hope to keep that record going for a long time.

I don't get the trunk mounted extinguisher thing...if you need it, you need it NOW.

That low mounting point for the 3 point belt doesn't look like a great idea. In a crash the belt will pull down on the drivers shoulder, could cause injury, like a crushed shoulder.

 

Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. I guess there's no good spot inside, and better than not having one at all?

 

As cramped as my cab is it's the perfect spot, never in the way.

 

In my model A it is mounted horizontal on the seat riser on the passenger side.
My personal preference is to have it mounted somewhere in the drivers compartment for quick access on my way out of the vehicle.

Easy to access, but hope I never need to use it!

 

Under the passenger side seat of the wife’s 56 Chev and happy with that position.
I was the passenger 3 weeks ago and I had to deal with an engine bay fire.
Got the clacker going I tell ya!
Could of been heaps worse but still an insurance job.
Always carry one,cheap as chips.

Inside the car where it is accessible from the drivers seat. More importantly is how it is secured, it must be able to take a crash and stay in place. Knew a guy who rolled his car, he took the extinguisher to the head, luckily it didn't kill him.

 

Between the bucket seats behind the shifter, no center console in one car. On floor centered in front of bench seat in others.

 

The location of that extiguiger is a good way to end up with a brain injury with only a minor impact or dead. The plastic strap and bracket are excellent at producing a projectile adding to the excitement during an emergency situation.

As others have said keeping it in the trunk makes no sense. If it's needed, you wont have the time or ability to get it out.
You also don't want it knocking your head during an accident.
My hot rods have it mounted to the floor in front of the passenger seat.

 

My OT drag week ride, one on each front door panel. Easy access for pilot and copilot. Double steel band clamp's and out of the way.( Halotron in all of mine )

I take the extinguisher out of the car when I go racing, I leave it in the pits.

 

Right On!! My el camino roof will kink if hit on the side and that belt will tear right into my shoulder. Nothing but lap belts for my el camino..

 

They don't weigh that much do they? I like to have one with me all the time just in case.

 

Apparently I am not the only one. Actually after rethinking it, maybe it's not the perfect place. I do like that others besides me can easily spot it but I may have room somewhere else, maybe..

 

It's not the weight.

I don't have a mounting system for it that will survive a 100+ mph crash, and I don't want it coming loose under those conditions (ask racer-x about that). And it also is more likely to do some good in the pits. And there is a fire crew that will get to me quicker than I could be able to put out a fire if I were to crash....
