Hi guys im new here and i just got a new (to me) 50 merc! Very excited about it and excited to be a part of your guys forum! So the car is 6v stock came with this chrome generator/alternator? That the bearing died on it. Sent it in to get rebuilt. Got it back put it on as i tried to start it smoke started coming inside the cab. Jumped out and saw the generator was smoking. Quickly took off the battery cable. Checked for anything on fire (nothing was) so the question is 1- did i cause damage and 2- what the heck happened? I can see inside the generator everything looks modern if you will ill post some pics. Thank you! First 2 pics of what it looks like before taking it out the other pics are close ups of the insides. Looks like a big orange disc inside im confused and frustrated! Thanks again in advance! 20190403_123831.jpg 20190327_174554.jpg 20190409_190447.jpg 20190409_190434.jpg 20190403_123831.jpg 20190327_174554.jpg 20190409_190447.jpg 20190409_190434.jpg

  2. You have an alternator - not a generator.

The picture taken of the rear of the alternator shows the bridge rectifier assembly. The red "disc" inside is the rotor.

Your rebuilder probably rebuilt the unit using 12 volt parts. Yank it off and go back to whoever rebuilt it and bitch!

Hard to say what got cooked until you get it running again at the proper voltage.

Also does it matter if its positive ground? Does that have to be wired appropriately in the alternator or it doesn't matter? Sorry just thought of that

You might check with Smith Auto Electric in Yakima Wa. They are used to odd ball stuff and don't flinch. They are also car guys who understand old cars. They do do stuff that is mailed in and mail it back.

If an auto electric company, you should ask them if they can fix the one you have cheaper than buying another new one.

And...having the guy who just screwed up fix it may sound just, but that is more likely to cost tons of money than it is to save you dozens...

You know i would but tbh this guy wasn't believing its a positive ground. So lost my business and telling my buddies to keep clear. I wouldn't even want him to attempt to redo it

A six volt positive ground alternator would be a standard Ford 8N or 9N tractor upgrade They aren't cheap but should be rather common.

  16. And just noting that you have an alternator, which WE all know (you too now), But- Better check pulley grooves, because if you have a wider belt for the crank/WP's, that Skinny Minnie alt pulley wont jive for too long... Everything has to be the same, or- you put thinner belts on everything......and then....... Good luck.;)

Hey guys quick question. So im gonna order a 6v positive ground 40 amp alternator from brillman and i wanted to replace the yellow wire that got fried (posted a pic above) what gauge wire would i order? Seems as if the yellow wire was the one that was overheating and as you guys say "let the smoke out" lol just wanted to verify if my order and application is right with you guys first. Have an awesome thursday everyone!

  19. I have done business with Brillman and I can say they are a reputable company and they can also supply you with any fabric insulated wire you may need to replace what has been damaged.

40 amp should be fine, stock it was 36 amp. Replace the wire that burned with the same gauge or next size bigger. A wire stripper with the wire gauge size marked on it will tell you what gauge the burned wire is.

At 60 amp output that may fry your amp gauge. Or put out more than you're wiring can take.

I’d suggest you follow these guys suggestions. You were on the right track and suddenly took a left turn.
Don’t install a 60 amp generator in your system.
