Hi guys im new here and i just got a new (to me) 50 merc! Very excited about it and excited to be a part of your guys forum! So the car is 6v stock came with this chrome generator/alternator? That the bearing died on it. Sent it in to get rebuilt. Got it back put it on as i tried to start it smoke started coming inside the cab. Jumped out and saw the generator was smoking. Quickly took off the battery cable. Checked for anything on fire (nothing was) so the question is 1- did i cause damage and 2- what the heck happened? I can see inside the generator everything looks modern if you will ill post some pics. Thank you! First 2 pics of what it looks like before taking it out the other pics are close ups of the insides. Looks like a big orange disc inside im confused and frustrated! Thanks again in advance!
You have an alternator - not a generator. The picture taken of the rear of the alternator shows the bridge rectifier assembly. The red "disc" inside is the rotor. Your rebuilder probably rebuilt the unit using 12 volt parts. Yank it off and go back to whoever rebuilt it and bitch! Hard to say what got cooked until you get it running again at the proper voltage. Oldmics
Thank you so much! I appreciate your help. I specifically told him 6v and even wrote it on the case! Thanks again! Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Also does it matter if its positive ground? Does that have to be wired appropriately in the alternator or it doesn't matter? Sorry just thought of that Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thank you! So the guy that rebuilt it was a moron he doesn't understand what im trying to say about positive ground so my next question would be if you guys can point me to a alternator to fit my application i can buy on line. Here is a pic of the alternator as it is now. Thanks for helping me out Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Here is what I found by googling 6 volt positive ground alternator: https://brillman.com/product/6-volt...p4l-gcQmbYlFmVfzH4BXWcvQEgHViSqxoC8iMQAvD_BwE https://www.googleadservices.com/pa...hUKEwi0kO2Q9sXhAhUR0awKHWa4BRMQ9aACCEQ&adurl= https://www.qualitypowerauto.com/catalog.php?item=24
Thank you kindly! I was actually looking at that one from quality power auto! I appreciate everyones help! Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Randy at Fifth Avenue Garage has 6 volt alternators and a good reputation for quality. http://online.fliphtml5.com/fkydw/vxmo/?1549927882234#p=1
You might check with Smith Auto Electric in Yakima Wa. They are used to odd ball stuff and don't flinch. They are also car guys who understand old cars. They do do stuff that is mailed in and mail it back. http://smithae.com/ Who ever you go through tell them exactly what you have and what you are up against.
If an auto electric company, you should ask them if they can fix the one you have cheaper than buying another new one.
Thank you everyone for your great input! After eork im gonna look into these companies ! Truly appreciate everyones help! Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
And...having the guy who just screwed up fix it may sound just, but that is more likely to cost tons of money than it is to save you dozens...
You know i would but tbh this guy wasn't believing its a positive ground. So lost my business and telling my buddies to keep clear. I wouldn't even want him to attempt to redo it Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
A six volt positive ground alternator would be a standard Ford 8N or 9N tractor upgrade They aren't cheap but should be rather common.
And just noting that you have an alternator, which WE all know (you too now), But- Better check pulley grooves, because if you have a wider belt for the crank/WP's, that Skinny Minnie alt pulley wont jive for too long... Everything has to be the same, or- you put thinner belts on everything......and then....... Good luck.
Thanks guys heres an update so i did a good inspection under the dash and got this pic . Seems like the rest of the wire bubbled but nothing crazy like this. .. here is the alternator im thinking about. https://brillman.com/product/6-volt-one-wire-alternator-40-amp-positive-ground/ Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Hey guys quick question. So im gonna order a 6v positive ground 40 amp alternator from brillman and i wanted to replace the yellow wire that got fried (posted a pic above) what gauge wire would i order? Seems as if the yellow wire was the one that was overheating and as you guys say "let the smoke out" lol just wanted to verify if my order and application is right with you guys first. Have an awesome thursday everyone! Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I have done business with Brillman and I can say they are a reputable company and they can also supply you with any fabric insulated wire you may need to replace what has been damaged.
Thank you for the reassurance! So i think im gonna go with them. Its a 40 amp alternator. Will that be good to go for what im doing? Car is stock and not thinking of doing any crazy things like sound system or tvs lol.. Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
40 amp should be fine, stock it was 36 amp. Replace the wire that burned with the same gauge or next size bigger. A wire stripper with the wire gauge size marked on it will tell you what gauge the burned wire is.
Ok sounds good i went ahead and ordered this guy from quality power auto since they are a bit closer. I appreciate all the help. Ill keep yall updated! Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
So what alternator would you all suggest i get for this set up? Its a 6v positive ground.. the only thing it has other than stock is a little engine temp gauge below the dash.. other than that its stock... thanks Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I’d suggest you follow these guys suggestions. You were on the right track and suddenly took a left turn. Don’t install a 60 amp generator in your system.
Ok so this is the one i should get then... https://brillman.com/product/6-volt-one-wire-alternator-40-amp-positive-ground/ Thanks for hanging in there with me guys! Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Ok great so the 40 amp this alternator makes is spot on for me right? Just wanna be 100% before i order lol Sent from my SM-G955U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
