Customs 1940 Mercury trunk handle nut- suggestions?

Hi guys, its been a while since Ive posted on the HAMB, but Im in a bit of a fix..
I just had my merc painted and the trunk handle NUT got lost.. (its the nut that holds the handle in its base).

Ive looked everywhere, you name it- no luck. The piece is a 59/64 -24 jam nut, as far as I can tell... Anyone have one laying around they'd sell or maybe a source where I can find one?

Looks like the same kinda nut that a 46 Ford uses.

I think you can get those from Bob Drake and the like.

I just sent a list of convertible top hardware to Totally Stainless. They have a machinist that can make one for you if you can give spec.

41-48 is different. I’ve checked everywhere, even bought one online just to see- no dice

 

No suppliers carry a 1940. It is different than 39, 41-48.

 

I’d take the handle to my local machine shop with a description of what I want. I’m sure they could whip one up in under an hour.

Just a shot in the dark but Model A dash light has a large nut, let me dig one out and check.

 

Just guessing here, it could be 15/16-24 (.938 dia vs .922 dia)
If so, there seems to be a lot of those available.

Sorry slim, just checked a Model A dash light nut and the ID is .774.

 

Another thought, some dash mount cigarette lighters have a nut like you need.

 

I just checked on E-Bay Motors, under 1940 Mercury Trunk Handle and there is a new aftermarket nut listed.

 

Try this guy....he has a TON of handles and may have the nut that you need.... [email protected]

 

The nuts listed are 41-48.. I ordered one just hoping, and my buddy gave me a 41-48 handle complete. Way too big..

Also, if you look at the handles that are actually 41 Mercury, theyre missing the nut too- hahaha

Machine shop is your best bet, make some extras and sell some since they're so hard to come by. Or if you can find a tap the same size anyone with a lathe can drill and tap an existing nut for you.

 

15/16" multiplies to 60/64", for comparison sake.

That is 1/64th (0.015625") larger than 59/64". That would be expressed as 0.0078125" at the tip of the threads.

If it is not really exactly 15/16-24, and it is actually 59/64-24, 15/16-24 will fit.

I cannot imagine that 1/128" will make the handle fall out, or not work.

If it makes you worry, put a single wrap of pipe thread tape on it.

Also remember, if this is a jam nut you can use a Stover nut, which is effectively pinched, to create an interference fit with the threads. Others are similar in function

 

^^. Can easily be that much undersize, esp considering the process of mfg those.
They weren't cut or chased; they were "as-cast".
If you want the exact nominal thread spec, go to your machinist and have him check with "Pee Dee" wires to get the actual pitch diameter. He'll need to compare the measurement to the ones provided with the PD wires or those in Machinery's Handbook for the nominal O.D.

 

Sorry to lead you that way. Hope i don't run into same issue as they have a pot load of my stuff right now.

After searching high and low, I ended up having my local machinist spin me up a couple... Now I can brag about my $60 hand made NUTS

 

Save yourself the headache, shave the truck handle and install a popper on the truck.

The headache would be shaving and metal working a freshly painted car. I kept my door handles, trunk handle because they work
