Historical landmark in Los Angeles, California

The funicular has operated on two different sites, using the same cars and station elements. The original Angels Flight location, with tracks connecting Hill Street and Olive Street, operated from 1901 until it was closed in 1969, when its site was cleared for redevelopment.

The second Angels Flight location opened one half block South of the original location in 1996, with tracks connecting Hill Street and California Plaza.

    Hello,

The 1956 photo shows the original Angels Flight with the neighboring tunnel. Some people have said that the yellow cab is a Checker Cab as they were popular in Los Angeles. But, The 1956 through 1958 A8 Checkers featured single headlights, 1953 Chevrolet taillights, and a thick, single-bar grille.

So, the general consensus is that the yellow cab in the photo is a 1956 Plymouth.

My dad introduced us to the Angels Flight, as it was a short cab ride from his work in downtown Los Angeles. My brother and I were thrilled to see the sharp, angle slope rise as we went up and the views down were pretty awesome, too. (similar, but different city wise to the castle in Salzburg, in Europe) But, for an awesome city view from a moving tram, up or down, the Angel’s Flight should not be missed, the next time anyone is in Los Angeles.

Recently, the Angel’s Flight trams have been in story after story during the TV series, Bosch. It is one of LA’s visitor's sights to see. Angels Flight is a landmark 2 ft 6 in narrow gauge funicular railway in the Bunker Hill district of Downtown Los Angeles, California. It has two funicular cars, Sinai and Olivet, running in opposite directions on a shared cable on the 315 feet long inclined railway. It is the shortest railroad in the world.

Jnaki, the Michael Connelly book on Angles Flight with Bosch was a great read. Never seen the show. Thanks for the story and history.

    Hey O,
Thanks. The whole So Cal area (Especially, LA) is loaded with history and when people see it in recent films or movies, it comes to life. I like to write a short information sheet on each photo from the eras, with commentary of our own So Cal history or experiences from that time period. Much like people all across the USA, if you stay in one area long enough, there are plenty of experiences and incidents from the history of the family or location.

Some people do not like So Cal, but for many, we would not have it any other way... Now, that we have been here for so long, it would be difficult, regardless of the place, to leave and not return. We are locked into this area until the final stage...

Besides, 3/4 of our whole extended family, relatives and friends are still in So Cal. Spread out, but still here. The ones that have moved away, still want to come back, but remain living in the Midwest area, for now. So Cal is still a great area for everyday hot rodding...

Gabby Bleeker hasn’t changed much in the 50+ years since this photo was taken. He’s still a slim guy, tough as nails and has a sharp mind.
