I was in 3rd grade in 1959, we were not permitted to play marbles for "keeps" but all the cool kids did anyway. I almost got my ass beat when some kid told on me after I won all his marbles. By the end of the year I had two big coffee cans full, I traded a bunch of them for AMT model cars. Win,win

 

You're a little older than me, in '59 I was 3, but we played marbles in the 60s too. Amazingly I still have them all out in the garage in one of those old metal saltine cracker containers.

 

I'm only a year older than you and we did play marbles when I was a kid.

 

Yes, Nike missile bases were built surrounding almost all major US cities. Many of the locations still exist and are repurposed by the new owners. There is one such base about 10 miles south of where I live in Rockwall, Texas. The old base is just north east of Terrell, Texas.
These Nike Missiles were armed with a small nuclear warhead which was designed to explode in the middle a formation of incoming soviet aircraft.
