Now the question is, do i want to buy some parts and patch em in or do i want to buy an english wheel and better fab tools to learn some useful things for the future before i patch things in.

Don't know if I'd go that far. But I love the car, I have one myself, but it's the Canadian mercury version (four inches shorter the the American Merc, same as the ford)

That's a good question. All depends on your skill and the value of your time vs value of your money.

I'm new to this as well. I'm just a 21 year old kid who is working on his first project as well. Before I bought mine I did all sorts of research, and came across a bunch of info. The hardest part was figuring out the serial number on mine as the Canadian cars had different type of number. And it's not easy finding info on it as mine is one of 430 of its kind

Please explain to a fellow hamber…. The exact meaning of a "long door" we have a 1948 Merc. coupe out at the farm that I'm thinking about. Also have 2 1948 Merc. 4 door sedans and a bunch of assorted flathead stuff. Is the long door term used for coupes? I could have them for free if I showed any interest at all. These cars are field cars and need a ton of work, but not too rusty at all. Gary

  12. Ford and Merc made two different coupe body styles 46-48 the short door or business coupe has the same shorter door as a four door sedan-the rear roofline is more laid down- the distance from the bottom of the back window to the trunk lid is greater. There was no back seat in a short door coupe. The long door has the same longer door as a two door sedan- to gain access to the rear passenger seat. The roof line is more upright at the back to allow more headroom. The distance between the back window and the trunk lid is less than a short door. The wheelbase and frame is basically the same between the body styles- but Mercury’s were more common with a 118 inch wheelbase with some 114 inch wheelbase models in Canada- Fords were all 114’s

  13. Mercury didn't offer the 'short door' business coupe in the US, only the larger 'long door' coupe. Technically, the long door is referred to as a 'coupe sedan' by both Ford and Mercury. Other than the longer frame/front sheetmetal, the majority of parts will interchange although not all are identical.

As noted, the Canadian Mercs used the shorter Ford frame with suitably shortened sheetmetal and they did offer the short door coupe in the Mercury up there.

I must have had a weird car then because I hauled home a 42 mercury short door coupe. You can see it if you search 48 ford sedan to business coupe. Not arguing with anyone but it had a mercury steering wheel and all mercury front sheet metal.

I’ll start a seperate thread, it’s a killer build by a very special young fabricator.

The perfect cap, suit the merc so well.
I need some 15” for mine, almost thinking they’re unobtainium though.

I just love these old fat Fendered Fords they are one of my favorite cars. I thought I would have this little copper sedan forever, it was Hemi powered with a 354, and the best driving Car you ever saw. It was built much more as a Hot Rod than a custom. Some damn fool offered me more than I could turn down and down the road it went. Saw it on TV about 6 weeks later down in Florida on that car show with that crazy little old guy with the big Blonde wife, I believe his name was Ted Vernon. Went down there to bring it back home but when I got there it was gone. On the look now for the next one. Even have a spare Hemi for that one too... 55 & 49 009 (Medium).jpg 450a_12 (Small).jpg

If you don’t mind reproductions, there are plenty of 15” Flipper caps on the market. Check E-bay, Speedway Motors, or Summit (to name a few).
