Hi Glenn , I was only at the Hop for an hour. Had kids in tow. Took the roadster. I think given time this will be a great event . Just needs time to grow. Good place- I'm biased as it's so close to me- but good to see them having a go.

I thought The Hop was awesome - really cool venue that was very reminiscent of the photos from High School shows in the US in the 50s, and some really good bands. Australia (or at least Victoria) only seems to have 2 types of events - reliability runs and camping shows - both of which are held far from the city, so its great to have a single-day, inner city, drive-in drive-out event, to display the cars in a way that you can actually see them and you can catch up with people and check out some bands. The turnout was small and I heard people stayed away (and some that attended complained) that because of the set up, they couldn't drink enough alcohol to 'have fun' because they had to drive home afterward. This blows my mind!

I'm not sure why car shows here have to be synonymous with drinking, but the organisers are thinking of changing the event to allow camping, which would mean a venue change and then its just another Boogaloo/Chopped where the cars are spread wide amongst dirty tents and everyone gets feral and violent after dark - would be a real shame. I hope people support this show so it doesn't change.

Deadbeat, it's at the Coburg velodrome.

Zac, I agree there's room for a static show for traditional cars. I was busy that day and had other things that needed doing, but I made the effort. Even though it's just up the road I only came for under an hour. And you could argue not the best value for the $30 for the time I spent there. But I wanted to support this. So was happy to go for even that short a time.

I enjoyed getting my car out, driving there with the kids, talking to a few people, the thing I did the least of was look at cars. But I too hope they stick to this type of event. And location.

It'll grow, just give it a year or two. Maybe later in the year, say when the boogaloo was on would be a good time. I wonder if part of it is people have been to a lot of stuff over the past few months and a couple of months with nothing on would get more interested. It would certainly allow the grass to green up which would really give it a nice atmosphere.

I enjoyed it as is and would go again.

  10. I figured I should post some stuff up here, & there probably isn't any better car to start with than Australia's Oldest Known Hot Rod, PeterThomasRoadster1.jpg
Built by Peter Thomas in the Late 40's, the shot of the car with steel wheels are from the early 50's after he sold the car to finance his business - Aviation Welding

    PeterThomasRoadster2.jpg
The A Model in the back ground is quite likely the First A V8 in Australia, he swapped in the original motor from the '32 in approx 1950 & used it as his every day driver

    PeterThomasRoadster10.JPG
How the Roadster looks at the moment, one day we will restore it to how it was in the 40's

My '28 roadster, currently getting a total rebuild. Body is going onto a mildly modified '32 chassis with a 39 Merc Flathead to push it along. Should drive on the freeway a bit better than with the old banger!

Here’s a few more pics from the Hop last weekend . Good venue . Hope it will continue and grow. Had to leave early so didn’t get a chance to check out any of the bands.

Dave, the convert is a Borgward Isabella. Andy who put the Hop on did mechanical work to put it on the road recently.

We are currently in negotiations to find a new home. With the hope that the girdles will live again

  22. Front panels mocked up, floors are almost finished and welded in. New seats are installed which are a better fit for the new direction the car has taken. Final welding of the floor and firewall is next on the list. 24. We have been slowly back dating the roadster 32Hiboy1.JPG 32Hiboy2.JPG
Changed the radials out for 5.60-15" Firestones on the Front & 8.90-15" Firestones on the back
    32Hiboy6.JPG
Swapped out the VDO gauges that were state of the art when they were first put in the late 70's, for original Stewart Warner Wings Gauges

    32Hiboy8.JPG
Swapped the Waggot 2x2 intake with 57 Ford Holleys for an Edelbrock 3x2 with Chrome 97's, we have also recently got rid of the overflow bottle & swapped the early Mallory out for a Vertex Mag

I honestly think it looks a lot better with Olds Fiesta caps then it does with the Aussie Made ribbed accessory caps

I was down at Tony's recently and we got a bit done on his newly acquired '36 Cabriolet.

Another few, the last shot has had a bit of photochopping as well to get an idea of the final look. But progress is good, but still a ways to go on the chop.
