Bear with me on this, as the end result is definitely worth sticking around for.
A little over 12 months ago myself and my business partners had the privilege of displaying some products at the Grand National Roadster Show. I’d been to the states a number of times previously but never had the chance of attending the GNRS.
To say I was blown away was an understatement, the size and quality was breathtaking. What really got me though were the customs, more specifically a certain black, Carson topped 38 cabriolet parked in front of the suede palace.
I love my Roadster, but it’s raw, bare bones hot rod. This custom spelt out class, real Hollywood golden era style.
From that point on I was hooked.

Fast forward 2 weeks and I was back in Melbourne, Australia. I had a deuce 5 window that I was collecting parts for to begin the build but this custom stuck in my mind.
Trolling through Instagram one afternoon and I come across a 41 convertible for sale, built by Grant Maclean in North Queensland, about 2000kms from me.
One thing led to another and the deal was done, the deuce to be sold to pay for the 41.

Grant’s vision was the same as mine, a period perfect 40’s custom, so I’ve left the car in Grants care while he continues the transformation. Anyway, all this work is Grants, i haven’t physically touched the car yet, a constant stream of updates and pics and kept the excitement going.
Anyway, I’ll post some pics, sit back and enjoy a true craftsman work.

Saying good bye to the deuce

You don't see too many post guys trading a Deuce Coupe for a '41 sedan. You can tell that the Kustom bug has bitten you. Thank you for sharing the story and the progress. The craftsmanship is amazing and what a transformation out of the sedan. Please keep us posted with your future progress.

  10. I like your vision/transformation. Are you building 2 simultaneously? I'm a bit confused how it went from tan/cream to shiney black then back to tan/cream and grey primer mid build.

I love custom '41s, especially this style. Looking forward to more progress.

I'm confused as to the transition from tan to black in the construction photos. Are there two cars being converted?

Great transformation! Looking forward to finish, what’s the plan for the top?

Were you part of the garage Work station/cabinet crew at GNRS?

This is a great pic with the grille delete. One has a small oval opening on the car on the right. [IMG]

    I’m spitting green with envy.
I’d make a trade like that in a minute. I’ve always wanted a 40’s styled custom.
    Two cars????

I remember you guys! We talked about those cabinets at your display...they are incredible!

Not sure if you were the guy that asked about my 41 Tudor sitting just outside of the building you were in. One of you guys asked to look under the hood...maybe that was you.
    Edit: it was Frank

Just so people aren’t confused, it’s just the one car, after grant did the initial metal work he hit it with a quick coat of black over the tan.
It came apart again for the moulding of the guards, frenched headlights, recessed number plate and a re chop of the screen. He’s once again got black paint laid down.

Bloody Victorians taking the best cars out of Queensland .....
I'm just glad that Grant is getting the Ford bug out of his system so he can start on something GM shortly.
