HAMB’ers who else does spline cutting. I need my f150 trans main shaft turned and milled to my Model A 6 spline. Moser engineering told me they can’t do this but others have had it done by them in the past.

The shaft may be hardened to the point where it isn't productive to turn it down and machine new splines. I've seen a few pieces off industrial equipmemt that were that way when I sent them in to be worked on and the shop said that the steel had been hardened to the point that they couldn't machine it.

If it is just something they don't want to deal with though a good job shop machine shop should be able to handle it.

Mr 48. I see. I’m going to a industrial machine shop today and see what they can do. They’ll be turning my model A flywheel down so I’ll give them a try.

It should be pretty much standard procedure if the shaft is machineable.

When I worked at a transmission shop I learnt the "trick" of roughly removing the hardened surface of the shaft with an angle grinder while the shaft turned slowly in the lathe, then machining.
I think it was on a TH400 shaft though, maybe the Ford is through hardened?

Depends on how hard it is.We machine materials up to about 60 rc.Not sure if that piece is hardened through or just case hardened.Makes big difference.Theres ways to machine harder material like edm and grinding we do that as well.

    Thanks for the info everyone.

I did cut it with a cut off wheel and it went fairly easy.

Or if you still have the scrap piece you cut off, try drilling a 3/16 or 1/4 hole in the center of the cut?

Try JDM Machine in Staples, Minnesota.

They just cut some tapered internal splines in a pitman arm for a bus (48' Motor Coach, actually) application for the company I work for. I know they also do external splines. They did a very good job.

Good machine shop has tooling and tool speed to overcome hard metals...
Old machine shop had broaching machines and were restricted to some Rockwell bumps.

I’d say it’s case hardened. I can drill the inside of the shaft. The outside is a bit harder.
