At the lower section is a tower, which is just behind the only exit street to the inland Laguna Beach Canyon area and beyond to the major freeways (today). In this photo there was only a two lane road leading out of the city with no freeways back then. But, this is the busiest intersection of the beach city, both on the road and on the beach side attractions.

Nice photo of a presumed summer weekend afternoon on Pacific Coast Highway in downtown Laguna Beach, CA. For current visitors to South Orange County, the traffic has been like this since before we could drive. It is 1954, as there are no 55 Chevy sedans in the photo. In the bottom of this PCH hill, going South, to the right, is the world famous Main Beach. This beach is within touching distance from the right lane of the road. It has the boardwalk, volleyball courts and some of the most intense outdoor basketball played on the courts along the Westcoast of So Cal.

During the summer, the weekend traffic is so thick, that the locals just don’t drive down this PCH road. Several back roads are known to the locals that will bypass this intense intersection, if passage is necessary. Otherwise, it is just not worth the view of the volleyball players, visitors, sun bathing themselves, and the beautiful “crystal blue persuasion” just glistening off of the mild surf.

At the very top of the mountain in the far section of the photo, the development had begun on this upper area of Laguna Beach. Back then, it was in private hands before being annexed to the Orange County ownership or the city.

“Arch Beach” used to be its own township (it was annexed into Laguna Beach in 1964); lots were sold for $10 apiece in 1911; and real estate agents have been extoling the virtues of the neighborhood for just as long – one classified ad in 1937 said “finest view between Frisco and San Diego” and another in 1963 said “the MOST beautiful view in the world”. We agree wholeheartedly.”

By the time 1970 rolled around, this area was the last affordable home and lots available in the resort city of Laguna Beach. The lots were small, but the views were pretty nice of the coastal beaches, city, and ocean.

So, it does not matter if the photo was taken in 1954 or 2019, the cars have changed, but the traffic has not. Weekends are not a pristine coastal drive, unless it is 6 a.m. Then, it is so beautiful that people have remarked in the press that this area is equivalent to any coastal development in the world. The OC did and does have its attraction for thousands of visitors every weekend, 1954 or 2019.
