    Hello,

One one of those rain free weekdays, we had driven back from the San Diego city area and decided to stay on coastal or city roads instead of the I-5 freeway, whenever we could. We did see some odd, old cars parked and on the road, as we went through the coastal cities. This is reminiscent of those early 60s road trips to San Diego beaches and the times our friends needed less expensive upholstery across the border.

The strangest one that we saw, was a Studebaker 4 door sedan that had what looked like rear suicide doors.

“To be clear, no carmaker has ever called rear-hinged doors “suicide doors.” That would have been, well, marketing suicide. As car buffs, though, we love latching on to such pieces of jargon.”

“Whatever the origin, and whatever carmakers prefer to call rear-hinged doors, car enthusiasts are unlikely to stop calling them “suicide doors.”

This green 4 door Studebaker was sitting in a parking lot with a "For Sale" sign on the window. When we stopped for a driving break, I looked at the window sticker… It definitely was a project car…the sale sign said so. But, upon purchase, a California Personalized Plate was part of the package. “STUDE 1”

Also, the description was: 1949 Studebaker Commander, rare, SBC, low mileage rebuild, dog dish hubcaps, new moulding kit, rebuilt brakes and a new wiring harness.

On these coastal cruises, we have seen some of the nicest old cars just sitting around So Cal. This old Studebaker reminded us of those cool, finished, custom cars with the suicide doors open and the new interior on display at the old Sports Arena car shows. But, that was a long time ago.

  14. Smoke, and lots of it pouring out from under bonnet of the wife’s 56 Chev ,lucky we carry a fire extinguisher and it was quickly sorted. Melted fuel filter, the tips of the fan and smoke soot is all..plus lots of extinguisher snow.
A perished fuel line was the cause, lesson learnt. Check all the fuel lines when changing oils and filters,I doubt I’m an orphan on this one.
Just leaving a pub out country, started it and farrrkkk!
Lucky we weren’t travelling when it split. St Patrick was good to us today.

I'm glad you saved your ride with just very minimal damage, and thanks to you for sharing, I just purchased an extinguisher for my '57.
