George, I worked overtime shifts in both Sta.7 & 8. I think Paramount Pictures lot was nearby. I remember the Rescue 8 re-runs on TV as a kid. Thought it was pretty cool back then. Sta. 7 is completely different now. On a busy corner, Modern architecture, all glass, multi-story. Doesn't look at all like a fire station. Station 8 is still the same building as shown in your pictures.

  2. The best part of it all, was that it was a Coke truck. Sorting all those bottles after school was worthwhile. I never got to drive anything bigger than a GMC single axle semi, before going on to University. It turned out to be a real asset when it came to getting a job back then.
I would have loved to have driven a Mack, Kenworth, or Peterbuilt, but the company I worked for wanted me to commit to staying with them before putting me on the longer routes with the bigger trucks. I envied the guys on the bigger trucks, because they just picked up and dropped off the trailers, while I had to make deliveries and do a lot of lifting.
The one big disadvantage of driving the bigger trucks, was it was all mountain driving in BC, and in the early 60s all on two lane highways that were loaded with camper traffic in the summer, and lots of chain up days in the winter. Only someone that has driven the Hope - Princeton Highway, the Fraser Canyon, or the Rogers Pass, would have the real feeling of the kind of challenge driving could be. Lots of long 6% hills with sharp turns, no passing lanes, and evil weather at times.

I met a Gal today named Sherrie who race a 1/4 Midget race car. fullsizeoutput_1a64.jpeg These pictures are of her in the late '50s racing at some Southern Cal tracks. The car was built by Doug Caruthers. She says it's a Viking Craft with a Continental engine. It does about 35mph. She still owns the car fullsizeoutput_1a52.jpeg fullsizeoutput_1a59.jpeg fullsizeoutput_1a5d.jpeg fullsizeoutput_1a60.jpeg fullsizeoutput_1a67.jpeg fullsizeoutput_1a56.jpeg fullsizeoutput_1a64.jpeg She's the girl on the right in the picture with J.C. Aggie is holding her younger brother. UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_57d7.jpg Here is the car today.
