That 50 Olds was a favorite for me also. I had a 50 with many engines -- last one was a 394 with dual quads/Engle Cam/Jahns Pistonsc with a 3 speed laSalle trans and 4.30 axle(from a Pontiac hearse).
Great fun! especially to hear it run for the first time.

That’s what happens when you didn’t replace the aluminum planetary housing with a steel housing on a Torqueflite 727.

  16. Yes, that's Larry. He's probably thinking "look at all the shit to clean up before I can get this show going again".

I new him back in the Irwindale, a little bit of Long Beach and Orange County days, that does not look like Larry Sutton. That guy is too tall, too thin and a wrong shaped head, and from Long Beach to Orange County, I never saw him with ANYTHING but a black hat. I think he showered and slept in that black hat.

    34 ford crash.jpg
This photo appeared in Hot Rod around '57 to illustrate the virtues of a braced roll bar...the '34 was demolished in this crash but apparently the driver survived...no, the roll bar would not pass inspection by a long shot today, but for '57 it was above average.

Waters & Murray flathead-powered roadster. They later sold this car to the Bay Area's Eddie Bosio to build their Chevy-powered, torsion-bar sprung blue roadster.

This one, which was restored from its rusted remains by one of the original owners.

Unknown roadster unloading parts as the driver looks down, probably wondering what happened. I found this photo on the Los Angeles Public Library site, George Klass posted it on his site, and only then did I notice the shrapnel coming out …

Walt told me that the hemis used in the Freight Train were his motors, so this most likely is him driving.

Wow. After all these years I found a posting of this sad event. I too was there. Except I was 8 years old. Chuck and my dad, Darrell Angles were best friends and built this car when we lived in West Covina. I used to sit in it (driving ?) when they pushed it down E Tudor Street between Chuck's and our house. My dad was the team mechanic. I had to stand on the seat holding the steering wheel as we moved it.

I remember when we used to go to Bonneville salt flats and the hard lake bed by Edwards AFB to test new cars and ideas. I don't remember much from those trips, but my dad also worked with Mickey Thompson (Thompson Research in Los Angeles??). Somewhere I know we have old photos of really fast, futuristic cars, and old straight-6 hot rods.

I believe we raced Garlits and he lost. This may have been Bakersfield or Irwindale raceway. I also recall years later my dad laughing at idea of a rear engine slingshot.

It has been a long time, but I am sure we have pictures of what I knew as Miss Starlite. In just asking my Mom, she recalls the car being just Starlite.

Chrysler was our sponsor. When the accident happened, I was napping. But as I recall, Chuck was moving the car without his fire-suit. They didn't need to start the engine, but they did. The blower blew and took out the nitro tank in front of it, then consumed the car. My dad blamed himself for the blower failure. After that event, my dad never had anything to do with racing again. He and my mom packed up our old 55 Belair and we moved to northern California. My dad opened an automotive repair.

When I started driving, I wanted to "hot rod" one of my first cars. That is when my dad said no and spoke of Chuck's passing for the first time with me.
