Its amazing how many hot rod parts can be found in out of the way places; hardware store, house wares aisles, pet supplies, farm & ranch stores, etc.

The design here just gets better. Now not only will he have a great fan shroud but he will be able to bake cookies as he drives.

 

As it turns out due to space limitations I was only able to utilize a very small amount of material from those pretty cookie sheets.

About a 1/2” or so in depth of the formed corners that along with the extra space I gained with the bent tie rod allowed the shroud to be spaced that small amount back from the radiator core and allow the needed air flow.

The cookie sheets were about $7 each on sale and as nice as they are they were very challenging to weld with super low amperage Tig due to being thinner than I would have liked.
In the end it will pay off.

As long as they’re the best cookies (Peanut Butter ) I’m in

 

So here it is all no stick coated and wavy from welding and bolted in place.

After that I spent the better part of today blasting it and then metal working it with my shrinking disc and getting it nicely smoothed out so that I can drop it off tomorrow at the powder coating shop.

I take it that is some sort of nut-sert on the flange where the two halves split? Good thinking

Yes it’s a rivnut threaded insert. I’ve got them all over the car in all different sizes from 10-32” to 3/8”.

The best ones are splined so they really bite well when you install them.


The shroud mounts to the rad with 4 - 5/16” bolts into brackets with rivnuts I welded to the rad and the middle ones are 1/4”.

I built the shroud in 2 pieces so it would be really easy to install and remove.
That after experiencing the need to remove the radiator (or get out the cutting tools, which I ended up doing) to be able to remove the first shroud/electric fan mount

Blue One, with the quality of workmanship in the rest of the build, the fan shroud is again up to the level of "Yep, great job!"
Are you planning on an overflow tank (gasp, modern) for this? I could see a mount incorporated on the shroud. I know, more work suggestions from the peanut gallery, but better to mention now than after powder coat.
Or even a custom shaped one that blends in? Example for shape only...

Thanks, yes an overflow tank is on the radar, probably mount one vertically on the passenger side of the shroud probably using the shroud mounting bolts to hold it.
I kind of like the round finned one that OTB makes as it kinda matches my other finned aluminum engine stuff.

 

I wish I had known in the '60s that these and other speciality fasteners were available. I would still own a '51 Ford woody, one of the straightest ones I've ever seen with the exception of a few easily replaced wooden pieces. We've learned a lot about sourcing hardware from this build. Thanks!

 

Well the change over is complete. No more electric fan.

The shroud is back from the powder coating shop and installed.

Now I’ve gone and started something
I made the mounts for the electrical fuse panel and I’ll take it this week and get it the same color as the back of the dash.
In the meantime I’ll work on the gauge harness.

Quality work there Blue, I like it a lot.

 

My manual choke cable will go through the electrical panel and the firewall and I needed to make a bracket to hold the business end of it.

So I took some stainless and fabricated the bracket that mounts to the rear carb.

It might look flat in the pictures but it actually has 2 bends that raise the cable clamp about 3/8” higher than where it bolts to the carb.

Then I polished it up.

I made a larger rubber grommet with a small hole for the cable and installed it in the firewall.

 

Looks factory!! JW

The panel has been powder coated in the same Wimbledon white as the back of the dash and I installed it along with the mega fuse and the Rebel fuse panel.
Then I put the grommet in the firewall and ran all the wires out through it for the engine and all the lights.

 

Progress!

Out of curiosity what is this? Fuel filter?
