  22. When I first got my hot rod on the road I was running a SBC, T5 w/.63 OD, 3.50 gear and 31 inch tires. I could only use the OD on the highway and even then at 65 mph I had to downshift to pass anyone. Why is this relevant?

The Tremec's OD ratio of .63 will not work well with your 3.23 final drive ratio. You probably won't be able to use the overdrive because your motor will be taching maybe 1,300-1,500 at highway speeds. Rear tire height can fix the issue, but I doubt you'll be running 25 or 26 inch tall rear tires. You may want to run the numbers on a 4.11 or 4.30 rear gear. With a lower gear the car will have a lot more grunt through ALL the gears. At what RPM did your 350 make 290 horsepower? Engines perform the best (both economy and performance) when they're operating in their designed power band.

Here's the formula to figure out the right combo:
MPH x Rear Gear Ratio x 336 / Tire Height x Overdrive = Cruise RPM

BTW, your fabrication is exceptionally clean – very nice work.

Sorry, wasn't meant for you. I was responding to the post about patting yourself on the back.
I have no idea what he's talking about, as you're doing an outstanding job, and I look forward to watching the progress and your skill level. Carry on, brother, there's a lot of us out here rooting for you.

With all the feedback about gear ratio selection I am a little worried...The trans / gear shop I bought my Tremec and center section said this combination would work. I told him I would like to use 3.23 for highway trips. I figured with the light weight of the vehicle the combo would be suited. What to do?
