Event Coverage Second Annual Uncle Sam's Pie Eating Contest!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hot Rod Brando, Jan 4, 2019.

  1. Hey there all you vintage racers! This is the official thread for the USPEC #2! Event date is June 29th at Byron Dragway. As many of you know, this event is a recreation of some of the early style drag racing. Era correct vehicles, must run pie crust slicks, no burn outs etc. Everyone had a blast last year and this really levels the playing field so no matter if you are running a blower on a big block or a '40 Ford Coupe with a flathead, there's someone to race door to door with! See the Vintage Drag Racing 101 website for more info and rules. You can send in your registration now, if you would like, but it will be a couple weeks for us to start getting back to people. C'mon out and enjoy some "early times" racing! Or, as Paul Simon said, slip slidin away... More to come!

Just sent my pre-registration in. Had a GREAT time last year. The bowling pin trophies were really cool, and the pie was DELICIOUS!!!

  5. For anyone thinking about going as a spectator, this race is a blast. aside from the usual slow downs from cars braking, the racing is non stop. Since neither Dad or I have pie crusts for our cars we will have to go to watch. If your a vintage drag racing fan, do not miss this truly unique event!

Brando, I'm thinking of participating in 2019. But if I recall correctly, last year I think that there was a bit of question about pie-crust slicks that were allowable -- specifically tire width. Maybe I got it wrong, but are there specific requirements for 2019?
    Thanks

  7. Whatcha running? We did have some stricter rules last year, first time and all... We did find that tire size didn’t really make a difference based on how we ran the event. The only thing we don’t want are ones that are too big, sticking 4’ out the car etc. send me your specs and a pic and I’ll let you know. We would like to include as many running pies as we can and also keep the integrity of the feel and vibe...

  9. Andy, we had a real old fashioned pie eating contest at the event last year. Anyone could enter. Bring it!

It's a great time. Reminded me and my older brother of the early Meltdown's. LOTS and LOTS of fun.

I spectated last year but will participate this year. I bought extra wheels and am awaiting delivery of my new slicks (Towel City).

What I really like about this event is the absence of extended burnouts; everything moves along quickly. I raced in the early sixties, this is the way that I remember it.

My registration number showed up, yesterday morning. Not sure how many will be there, but there's over 200 registered.

It is a good video. I had a lot of fun last year and hopefully will again this year. I am number 252 and if every one does show up and three timed runs are necessary and then to run through eliminations may make for a busy track. If it grows I wondered before and wonder now if it will by necessity grow into a two day event.

    It's getting closer......Less than 2 months away.

I installed a new pressure plate and clutch disc in my 59 GMC. It's all ready to tow my 55 to the strip. Still need to get the new rear springs, (5 leaf station wagon), and Cal-Tracs in the 55, though.

All packed up and ready to go. It's going to be a great time.......Reminds me of the early Meltdowns.

Looks like good weather for tomorrow. A little warm, but nice and dry.

A BIG Thank You to everyone who helped put this on. Had a great time there. There were many cool cars. The weather was good, and the racing was EXCELLENT!!! The pie was quite tasty, too. This drag meet is definitely a must attend. Already planning to be there, next year.
