    Hey, cool start fellow HAMBers.
When a well known and talented photographer ask you if you can draw his own favourite car, well, you feel more than proud and happy. Thanks a lot Dale, it was really cool to do and your '55 really rocks.

    PURPLE PEOPLE EATER 1959
    upload_2019-3-1_3-42-20.png 1959 DRAGS VERSION
    Hello,

Reading the historic thread of the Purple People Eater (HAMB The Original "Purple People Eater" dragster 1957) just had a ring to it. We never saw this race car back then, but with a name like Purple People Eater, what was not to like? History is something we all like and learn from those good old days. That thread is pretty good. I have always taken a liking to streamlined race cars that were at our own neighborhood, Lions Dragstrip, especially from 1959 (The Sidewinder, Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton FED, Jocko’s, Scuderia, to name a few, J Naki You Tube )

But to see one from another part of the huge North American Continent was interesting to say the least. Those historic photos are just classic. Thanks for the history from that area. The two posted photos are rather cool and well preserved. But, for an old “flame guy”, the 1959 flame version strikes a chord, quite well, in my book.

Streamlining always seems to be a work of art. Anything to make the wind flow smoothly over tubing, motors, drivers, and even wheels, must help. There have been studies on the effects of streamlining in the quarter mile races. Some say it has no effect for the old, average top eliminator classes. (Ave 8-9 sec runs) While there are others that say "anything that makes air flow smoothly over exposed structures" makes better headway in as short of a time as it was/is.

“In fluid dynamics, the drag coefficient is a dimensionless quantity that is used to quantify the drag or resistance of an object in a fluid environment, such as air or water. It is used in the drag equation in which a lower drag coefficient indicates the object will have less aerodynamic or hydrodynamic drag.”

“The drag coefficient is a common measure in automotive design as it pertains to aerodynamics. Drag is a force that acts parallel and in the same direction as the airflow. The drag coefficient of an automobile impacts the way the automobile passes through the surrounding air.”

Could this version be good for a trip to the longer distance time trials at El Mirage or the Salt Flats?

    Hey FE,
Keep up the great work on the “Purple People Eater” FED and the cool thread from the Northern climate areas. History Lives!

I'm always impressed how a good painter can capture an object with just a few brush strokes. The paintings I particularly like are ones that look real from a distance - and totally abstract up close. I usually spend most of my time on the drawing and then colour it in. I think I've learned a few bad habits because of this so I thought I'd try some digital still-lives. Looking for something small I chose Matchbox cars from my 1970s childhood. Painting without outlines is a really interesting challenge. It's surprising what a big difference small details like the damage and highlights make. The longer you look, the more you notice subtle reflected colours and bounced light. I'm learning a lot!

  14. I love this picture. I was raised in an old railroad town and I can see this happening.

My wife had this old poster framed for me. It's her way of kicking my art out of the kitchen and to my bike room in the basement KENNY-B.JPG

  25. Alright fellas, this thing is heating up fast ! Figured I would join the party this week with a pencil I did of an old fave of mine. I had this Roth T-Shirt as a teen and I wore it until it was full of holes and thread bare. Never forget how sad (and pissed) I was to find out Mom had thrown it away on me! She made up for it with some homemade chocolate chip cookies. (he he)
