Art & Inspiration Steering wheels - we all got to have one

Have you ever installed a steering wheel thinking this is perfect for the car your building and then a few years down the road you start thinking a different wheel would look better? HRP

 

Done that many times, Danny. Not only steering wheels, but wheel covers, too. Still's cheaper than changin' women......

 

While the old beater is down for some new threads I been staring at the old banjo wheel which has been on the car for 30 years and thinking how good a 40 Ford wheel might look. HRP

I actually have two new ones, one still in the box, may not ever use them, post a photo you say.
That won't happen, one of them came from the "tweed and pastel" period.
I'd like to maintain what little credibility I have left!

 

Trends change, follow them if you like? Personal taste changes as we get on in years. Maybe they stay the same through the years. It's your ride equip it with what you like. I've never been one to follow the leader

 

What's wrong with vise-grips?

 

mine rides and drives like a truck so.... i have a truck steering wheel in it...lol
its a large diameter wheel to make up for the lack of power steering... it works well as long as i am paying attention when turning left as it is possible to rake my knuckles across the top of the door...….

Always liked the older corvette wheels. Finally saw one on a 32 5w several years back. Looked great. Go myself one. Then sold the 54 Chevy and the 32. Looks good hanging in the closet on a clothes hanger.

 

Yes! So now I have a small collection of them.

 

And sometimes it's what's behind your steering wheel that makes it special...

I always liked them too!
In case someone likes them but think they are a bit big for the small confines of an older hot rod they are being repopped in a smaller diameter.

OH YEAH! I've got this one for my 56.

 

I just had to try out my '59 Impala wheel on the T. Sure enough, I managed to break the plastic ring which springs back the horn ring. The good thing is, this is available new but the cost of it coupled with the shipping is too much for a cheapskate like me so that means I have to find someone else who needs to buy mid-fifties Chev parts to include my little piece in his shipment. Some days are diamonds...

Always liked the old banjo wheel on old Fords and the Vette wheel too. Worst wheel I ever had though was an old tri-five Chevy I bought years ago that had about a 10 inch chrome chain wheel on it. What a horrible mess it was, couldn't get it off quick enough.

 

The grandkids like those old Impala wheels.

Changed the wheel on the 41 about 7 or 8 times. I finally settled on a repop 40 wheel. Love it. Snowman

I've changed mine before hitting the road for the first time.

 

I have one exactly just like that octagon steering wheel except it's not gold, it is not round and it does not have plastic grips ....but it is exactly like yours

 

I tend to spend a small fortune in time and money getting the “right” steering wheels for my cars. The dash and the steering wheel are the two things you look at most if you are driving the car. It makes sense to be picky on these items.
I built a 1938 Studebaker banjo for my 1929 Ford cabriolet.

I am building a 1953 Buick wheel for my 1951 Ford

No photo yet.
I will build a 1939 Packard banjo for my 1929 Ford coupe.

I will roll a smaller rim and make my own horn button when I get to it.

 

I sure am glad to find out I'm not the only one with this problem. Maybe we could come up with a steering wheel exchange program? D

 

I have always thought mine are just what I wanted! Although I do like Vise grips.
