    Bobby Langley Scorpion

    Hello,

When we were young teenagers, we were drag racing fanatics. The local hot rods were fast and built to compete at Lions and be used as daily drivers to high school. The term pop off the hubcaps was a weekly occurrence. It certainly helped that we lived about 1.5 miles from the Dragstrip. During Saturday, Junior HS sports, we could hear the racers and watch them from the railroad track berm next to our athletic fields, including the baseball diamond.

My brother was older, so he was responsible for me on the weekends and luckily, I was “dragged” to Lions Dragstrip every week. I did not mind because, people thought I was an older teenager as part of the group. Later, my brother said I could wander off and enjoy the action by myself. I frequented the snack bar, because a lot of our friends worked there. Then I started using my dad’s camera to film the race cars and the races.

But, at the time the only race cars we saw and knew about, were the local So Cal racers. That was enough in anyone’s book and it satisfied our knowledge of drag racing in the West Coast area. Everywhere else, we read about in the local, weekly newspaper called Drag News.

But, our thirst for knowledge led to reading the Drag News paper weekly, going to the local speed shops for the copies and sitting around reading the stories from the So Cal dragstrips. (there were plenty of them at the time…) The stories from the other areas, South, Midwest, Northwest and East did not register with us, because, So Cal racers had the fastest and coolest looking race cars anywhere. Don who? What is a Greek? And The Scorpion? They were just names in the headlines from their respective areas.

Then one week, the record setting stories started rolling into the limelight. Who went 160mph? Week after week, the same stories were the headlines in the newspaper.

So, we knew about Don Garlits, but who was this Bobby Langley guy? We were excited to be going to a race of champions at Riverside Raceway in December of 1959 because all of the top racers from the East, South West, Northwest and Midwest were going to challenge the top West Coast racers for the top eliminator category. It would be the first time to see these famous racers from back east in person.

We finally got to see who the Scorpion was and boy, was it a race car. The design was streamlined, the motor was a big Hemi and the neatest thing was the scoop that had little fins as part of the casting. It was one fine package for a Texas Champion Race Car. It was an all-day race event to remember.

Then a few months later in March 1960, we saw Bobby Langley, again, ripping at the Bakersfield Smokers 2nd March Meet. It was the show of all shows… "Pics or it did not happen" is heard all of the time.

Here it is happening at Riverside in December 1959 and Bakersfield Smokers Meet in March 1960.

I recently moved causing us to go through a lot of stuff we kept over the past 45 years, in this mess we call memories, I found some of the sketches I did when I was 11-14 years old. We had print class in Jr High and had an opportunity to make copies of them the old fashion way not with a modern copy machine. They had to be pencil art, one was a collaboration with my shop partner Vic Groner, he was a great cartoon people artist and I was a car motorcycle artist so we combine one piece of art. Enjoy the ride of a pre teen to teanage gear head 47 + years ago.
