Lots of San Luis Obispo photos. The drag strip was at the county airport. It is now a busy commercial airport that serves several hundred thousand passengers a year.

 

Looks like they just threw the book at this one ..... I just don't know what book it might of been..... multiple traction devices..... where do you start.....it does have a Hemi.....and is that a spare tire hanging off the back?......

Many of those "spare tires" were filled with lead shot both to make the weight break and have the weight on the rear wheels. Worked for a while until the inspectors got wise.

 

I would really like to see some other shots of this thing mainly the suspension.... don't know why....just curious about what the multiple lift/ladder bar set up is all about... I realize for traction....but all of that?......

I think this was where the term "ladder" bars came from!

 

I'm pretty sure that this is the one that REALLY PISSES OFF @Dean Lowe. Spelled the beginning of the end for 'real' street rods in the street rod classes. Can't say that I blame him, either

Nice Willys coupe, from the Dave McClelland files, notice that gassers used to require full street equipment.


Champion Speed Shop's Fuller-chassis blown Chevy, Half Moon Bay.


Once the Paul Schieffer roadster, this car passed though many hands before it became the Henslee and Cook roadster. It was demolished in a top end crash, Riverside, I think.

Bruce Wheeler (of "Wheeler Dealer top fuel car fame) posted this shot on FB, his then-girlfriend in a dragster at Famoso. The car is Nick Van Wagner's, here with a fuel flathead, later with a carbed 364" Chrysler.


that's a lot of suds for a 248" flathead!

These guys, from Iowa, were hard runners, once ran an Ardun, later graduated to top fuel...made one of the first, if not the first, reversers.
