    Hello,
In 1961, my brother and I were in various stages of drag racing recovery. High School plodded on for me, while my brother was taking a year, off of college, for his recovery. It was a state of limbo. Two brothers that were heavily involved in hot rods, customs, and drag racing, just moving on with life in general. My dad saw what was happening and suggested we do “another something” together.

Surfing was getting into the picture, stronger and stronger, so the family cars started to change. We still liked the occasional full throttle runs down Cherry Ave. or the Terminal Island Freeway, so we had an outlet. But, for my dad, something was not right. He talked to his long time, automotive wizard, friend in Los Angeles and was told to send me up to his house for a surprise that might spark something in the both of the brothers.

Upon arrival at his cool house in L.A., in the driveway was a shiny black, 1956 Ford, two door sedan with this big, chrome stripe from front to back. We had never paid much attention to Fords, as we had a 58 Impala and the 40 Willys Coupe. But,for some reason, it sparked something in me while I was getting out of the Impala.

The explanation was that this 56 Ford sedan (Club model) just got finished running at Bonneville and the owner wanted to sell it to finance another coupe or roadster build for next year. The cost was very reasonable. The Ford sedan had what I noticed, other than the black shiny paint, was this tall floor shift lever with a black oval knob on it. The tall curved lever was sticking up higher than the dash, for that “old timey” look.

It had a Flathead motor, 3 carbs, all of the go fast stuff inside and of course, those wonderful, Moon Discs. If anything, the Moon Discs almost sealed the deal. When the motor was fired up, it rumbled and sounded ready for anything. I could instantly see me driving this Ford sedan to High School, with my hand on top of that tall lever. Driving around the neighborhood was fun. That motor had lots of power and that tall shift lever was a blast to use.

I thanked my dad’s friend and said I would have to talk to my brother about the 56 Ford sedan. I knew that he would be just as excited as I was in seeing it. But, that the long drive home made me think twice about the practicality of the cool Ford. I knew he would have the same ideas, too. This Ford sedan had a similar look to my brother’s first car from 1956-57, the 51 Olds sedan with Moon Discs.

But, what happened? I really wanted that 56 Ford. It would have been a cool project for my brother and I to get started for different adventures at Bonneville instead of Lions Dragstrip. When I told him of that cool 56 Ford, he was instantly ready for another car racing adventure.

We talked about modifying that Flathead for more power, possibly another GMC supercharger and lowering that Ford to scrape the ground for a more streamlining effect. (even a possible chop, just for something different…No one had a chopped car or truck in our high school OR Bixby Knolls area…it would have been a first!)

But, then, he quietly withdrew as he knew that he was not ready for anything car related, as yet. His wounds were central and would be noticed until they healed completely. His hands weren’t 100% functional as yet, either. He saw/understood his limitations.

So, we had to say no thanks to my dad’s friend, on the 56 Ford Bonneville Sedan. Awwww…only in our dreams… Within a few months later, I bought the 40 Ford Sedan Delivery and my brother bought a VW Van for our surfboards. Where is that cool 56 Ford Bonneville sedan, today?

  13. That's awesome....I'm loving it! I'd drive the wheels off of that. :)
