Got the rear fenders on while I save up for a 12v kit. Installing this B Distributor has me tearing my hair out, so I’m doing myself a favor! I’ll be turning 21 on the 12th!

  5. As it's late night here, my mind is wandering.

An hour ago my friend was over helping me with the wiring.
When connecting the black probe on the multimeter to the ignition coil, and the red to the chassis, we got 6 volts. When we switched, and had the red on the coil, and black on the chassis, we had -6 volts. I'm not sure which would be the correct way to have it wired, as I have bypassed the ammeter and key temporarily.

How would I correctly check the points on a B Distributor? Not used to these things.. obviously

That’s funny, right there! And poetic too.

  7. Had a block in the shop once, owner was real proud if it, told me it is fine, has been magnafluxed.
When I showed him the cracks I had to explain that a good block will PASS the magnaflux test.
Added another lump into the "magnafluxed" block pile out back of the shop.

stock Model A is a positive ground system, check the battery, which post is on the ground strap.

Thanks, John, a good way to start the weekend! :-D

The last B motor I built took me 4 blocks to find one that could be repaired.

  12. and I am told that I am too selective...........
I look all the time at blocks, very seldom does one go home with me, even less leave here.

  13. That's why I rarely go to "Swap Meets" of car parts anymore! Most of the stuff are things these guys have picked out a scrap (or should I say: CRAP) heaps! Some think that they have stuff with "Historical" value! Oh well, I guess I'm just too old!

I'm not even going to go into a recent B block purchase that was skimmed over with JB Weld and gloss paint. A fresh build with inserts from an 'automotive restoration machine shop'....

Your questions are of a fundamental nature and of general knowledge. Most people with average automotive experience know the answers to the questions you are asking. I personally don't like to answer them because I think it is a waste of time. But you are young and maybe a little wet.

Here are some pictures of one of my cars with a B distributor. See if you can figure it out from here.

  23. Honestly, I wouldn't complain about the "lack of quality" this one looks pretty good compared to some.
You could do some work in there but the gains would be negligible.
Check it for flat and run it, whatever you do, do not try to deck it to raise the compression. Run it with a single gasket, no more than 55# torque.

Just talked to Dan at Bert's Model A regarding my engine. Need to check the lift on the cam and decide if the Crower regrind is ok or switch over to a Bill Sipe cam. Other than that, it's in excellent shape for a 35 year old build.

If that pictured is the worst you have and/or can show, that is nothing to worry about.
Easy to clean that up, which you WILL want to do as leaving such trash in combustion area may cause 'hot spot' pre-ignition.
    Nice looking head otherwise ?
I have an aluminum Winfield crowfoot nos, from about '06. It is 6:1 and I think that the one that you show chamber of is also 6:1 .

Went to the swap meet in Denver today. Found a good price on this intake and carb. Thinking about running it on my stock roadster. Anybody have any thoughts on this set up?
