Technical horn button removal?

so today i got to pick through not just 46-48 ford and mercury heaven but car guy heaven, i picked up a wheel for 30 bucks and now i cant get the dang horn button off! on my 53 ford and my 54 ford you push down and twist counterclockwise. is that what should be the case here too?

 

has anyone taken one of these off?

 

did you try just pulling it off?

 

sort of...i dont know how hard is too hard... i played college football and im kinda a big guy. i dont want to break it!

 

I think @junkyardjeff had a thread on here a month or so back on this same thing.

 

the only one i found by him was a broken chevy horn button

 

If I recall correctly the button turns something like a quarter turn counter clockwise and comes off.

Something like two or three tabs on the backside of the button that have raised nubs that as you turn, tighten up a ramp like plate in the steering wheel.

yeah i pried it off, it was so rusted theres no way it was letting loose, also the steering wheel is fused to the nut and the column, any advise on that? just drill it out?

 

I got the trim ring for that hanging on a post in the shop. Let me get a pic of the backside and post it up to see if it will help. Give me a couple minutes...

 

Soak it in pb blaster...she'll come loose...you'll require a steering wheel puller..autozone will loan you one for free...Google steering wheel puller...Do Not Hit The Shaft with a BFH....

 

Ok. Here are a few shots of the backside of the horn ring. It looks to me as if you press down hard on the center area and the 3 tabs are rotated out from under their lock ring and then it lifts off.

i have a steering wheel puller, its just that its so corroded in there the center nut is disintegrating, ill try pb blaster first though!

 

If you need a trim ring you can have it. Chrome is no good but its all in one piece and the button isn't too bad. Just pay for shipping.

anyone know the thread pitch for the pulling screws for a 46-48 steering wheel? the holes are trashed and i want to run a tap through em

all right now cmon! i have been fighting this for two days now, it has soaked in pb blaster, it has been drilled, pried on and beaten on, my steering wheel puller left a dent in the bolt i stuck in the hole! im about to lose my mind here

I probably would not have stuck a bolt in the shaft hole.. Get the bolt out and try hitting the shaft ( its tapered). I 'm sure that woodruff( key is seized) .. try also tapping around on the end of that as well. My wheel took a little work before the puller popped it from the shaft.. But there is a lot of rust...

 

ill give that a try, its really in there haha maybe i could drill most of the shaft out?

 

You could try an air chisel with a punch. Vibration will loosen things up, some heat applied to the shaft would help too. I can't tell if you have the column still attached, if not you could heat the shaft from the bottom. Pack some wet rags around the parts you want to keep cool, apply heat, and some penetrating oil. Let it cool, the shaft will shrink.

 

no, shaft was cut out long ago then left outside like this hence the rust! thats a great idea too, much appreciated! sometimes when i get frustrated its hard to see some simple paths to success
