LB I always smile when I see that picture of the Shelby cars. I wonder what value those cars have today and wonder if the talented fabricators ever considered the value in any real sense?

There is a lot to take in looking at that one photo Jim, and, as you said, a lot of unsung heroes involved in the Shelby organization over the years.
It's really something, the crazy money those cars are bringing nowadays so I'm sure those guys could not have predicted anything approaching it.
I worked with a guy (older) that had the opportunity to visit a local Ford dealer here in Portland in the mid sixties when a 427 Cobra was displayed, he said the asking price was as hard to come up with then as the collector prices are in current times.

With split Ford front swing-axle, a little questionable in the handling department. But a rock solid "10" on the Testosterone scale.

Cooper Monaco--King Cobra. Basically a Formula One Cooper chassis widened somewhat and fitted with a two seat sports car body and a 289 Ford motor. This is a sister car to the one that won the 1964 LA Times GP at Riverside and the only survivor of the Shelby team cars to retain the majority of its original components. It was sold at the Barrett Jackson auction in 2014 for $1.65 million.

Peter Culkin raced two sports cars. His Mercedes-Benz 300SL coupe and the Mercedes-Corvette Special shown here. His main focus was road racing but he, also, drag raced both cars. And, he cleaned up winning several class championships. He drag raced the Mercedes-Corvette Special in the AM/SP class. Drag strips that I know of included Cotati, Vaca Valley, Fremont and Half Moon Bay in 1962, 1963 and 1964. Maybe someone has some photos ?

Peter Culkin in the Mercedes-Corvette Special circa 1962. BTW, Keith Black built the power plant in this car. Bing's Speed Shop did the additional modifications. scan0011.jpg
