These pictures were taken in 1961-63 by Montréal City employees.

These buildings are now gone, they make place for new buildings, streets , parks, etc.

I suspect Montréal was ''cleaning'' the poor districts before the 1967 Expo...

Love that too. When I was doing B & W photography, this was my favorit natural lighting: sun low in the sky, light cloud cover. Works really well to bring out texture, no washed-out highlights, no empty black shadows. If this had been taken on a clear day at noon, the texture on the building would have looked like chalk and the guy in the doorway could have been lost in dark shadow. Medium or large format help a lot. Old buidings look best, this way, IMO. Cars too.

How many years was this ahead of mandatory "on board" starting systems? First it was push starts, then electric or gasoline engine powered rollers to start the cars , then the self start systems like these guys are using. First time I've seen that photo. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

This post from Gary caught my attention; "Windjammer" was a documentary on the Norwegian school-ship "Christian Radich." My uncle served as first mate on the ship, but a professional actor played him in the movie.

The ship's crew consisted of a skeleton group of experienced seamen, including my uncle, who managed/trained a working crew of Norwegian teenagers as the ship sailed to various ports worldwide. In addition to learning how to crew a true sailing vessel, this was a real confidence-builder for the inexperienced young sailors as they learned to work together as a team.

When the ship came to New York in 1958, my uncle brought my parents and I on board for a tour.

The movie production was unique in that it was filmed with three cameras, synchronized to project a wide-angle image across three widths of three full-size screens. I remember the opening scene as particularly striking, as the head-on image of the Christian Radich breaking through the waves filled the entire front of the theater.
