GARY GABELICH Crossley Altered Sedan Bixby Knolls

    Hello,

Gary Gabelich was a skinny teenager from Bixby Knolls. He went to the local elementary, junior high school and ended up at Long Beach Poly HS. It was during his high school (and afterwards) time that we saw him in his first drag racing coupe. He was a fixture in Bixby Knolls during this time period. He was a relatively calm guy when we met and hung out with him.

By this time, he had already been a top Altered Race Car driver at Lions Dragstrip. His blue Crossley Sedan was odd looking, but fast. It was a combination of his skills, quick reactions and the Crossley, that made him an instant winner at the drags.
upload_2019-1-25_4-15-14.png As a teenager in a field of old time drag racing drivers, he stood out in contrast to the “old guys.” Brash was a word that could be used to describe him back then. But, to us, he was very nice, a wealth of information, and a good friend.

It was amazing that a friend we knew from high school became a world class race car driver. In 1962-65, he was getting more acknowledgment and also getting more rides in faster cars, like in the top gas and top fuel classes.

We sort of lost contact with him when we took off for various, away colleges. But, his notoriety continued in drag racing and finally, at the salt flats as one of the fastest men in the world. Who wouldn’t want to go 600 mph? Yowza !!!

    Thanks for the friendship, Gary…

“In 1985, Gary Gabelich Memorial Grove was dedicated in the northwest section of the park in memory of the local resident. Gary won many drag racing championships and set world speed records on both land and sea. He also was associated with several local charitable causes including the California Pool for the Handicapped, Special Olympics and March of Dimes.”

As usual there’s loads of great stuff posted again today!

    Last week Xhotrodder posted this:-

    upload_2019-1-25_16-48-22.jpeg

So I took up his challenge.
I haven’t got Photoshop but used an app called Procreate instead.
See if you can spot the difference!
