Need help Identifying my three speed. I bought it as a set with a 292...I have no idea what they came out of, or if they came from two different places originally. I want to get a kit to possibly rebuild it and at the very least, put all new seals in it. I also need a transmission yoke to hook driveshaft to, that I will have to have built. Numbers on side with shift levers are AB-7222-B and 92Z.
    numbers on tailshaft: WAA-7651-c
There are 28 splines on one end and 10 splines on the other.

I am looking at pics online...not the 277, not the 333....my dad said the cars had the longer tailshaft on the ones he has seen. I was thinking ford light duty three speed from a car. Is that all I need to tell the parts store for rear yoke and overhaul kit?

Check out vanpelt sales, transmission identification. Yours is so greasy its hard to tell, but it looks like it matches the drawings of the 292 trans used in the '50s.

  3. I think your front inpuit shaft is larger diameter than a passenger car trans. If so its a truck trans, still a gear cruncher non syncro in foreward & reverse.

T86 is a top loader. I'm going with T85 bullet proof. The number is cast into the right side.
    This is a T86

  7. The trans is long tailshaft Truck version of the three speed car trans that was in 1951 thru 62 ford cars and up to 64 trucks. Not worth rebuilding. Get a newer full syncro trans and trim the inpuit shaft back to fit the early bell.

Well, I wasn't really sure on the T86 being the numerical designation for that trans, but I knew it was a light duty 50s & early 60s Ford product.
But I do know what a T85 is, and have owned more than one, and a T85 has a curved bottom flange on the side cover. Interestingly enough the T85 is also the trans that Borg Warner modified to build the T10 4 speed.
    IOW, a T85 it ain't!
