We spent a few minutes discussing putting a manual tranny in it. He says he knows for certain he has all the stuff to put a 4spd in it. Then he went onto say put a modern 5spd in it using a spacer.

I'm not opposed to a stick shift, especially if this 302 has neck snapping torque.

I dunno why but it took me almost 3 hours to remove this clip...

Baby steps, one step closer to 302

Ive been trying to figure out this hydramatic conversion mess. From what i can see the flexplate on the 302 is the same diameter, same tooth count, and same torus mounting pattern as my 239.

How friggin awesome would life be if the engine plate from the Pontiac bolted to the GMC. That way i can still use my 6v starter and just pump 12volts to it. I also could retain my foot starter parts, and not have to relocate the battery to the passenger side. Being very optimistic at this point

Then hook it all back up to the early hydro, and look for a dual shift setup while waiting for it all to go crash boom bang

Remember with the engine off reverse is park, shift linkage is easy the Throttle Perssure linkage is a little harder to do.

  5. 12 volts on a 6 volt foot starter is easy-peasy. I did exactly that with my 41 and 48 Pontiacs. Never did hurt the starters.

My shifter right now is stuck. Is there some sort of safety lock out, or do i have something binding? I do not have the right keys for the car, but i doubt there is something tied into the ignition. The sad thing is almost everything is unhooked. I noticed there is a linkage tied into the starter somehow. I didnt get much into it.

With the throttle pressure linkage you talked about, i can see where that can be a PITA. In stock form the throttle linkage goes to a pivot point on the base of the block then up and over the head, carb on passenger side. With the 302 the carb is mounted driver side.

There are bosses on the poncho block for the throttle bracket that are not present on the GMC block. Doesn't be all that hard to make a new bracket that mounts to the pan bolts...

Maybe its just me, but it feels like a 6v starter wired to 12v spins faster than a standard 12v starter.

They do. They are nothing but a D.C. Motor more voltage more speed. The only thing that rarely happens, is when you crank for a extended time it may overheat and it may melt the solder on the comunitator

I met that guy yesterday, it went great. By the time i left he is giving me a whole engine, and said to just bring back what i don't use. I couldn't believe it, i never met the guy before yesterday and he wasn't very receptive on the phone.

Not only that, but the engine is still in the truck and he is going to remove it himself for me!

So i will be able to get all the engine parts i need PLUS all the stuff to put a 4spd behind the 302 if i choose to go that route.

The only issue I have had with running 6V starters on 12 V is they break the spring in the Bendix pretty often. At least they do on Hudsons. They do spin over like crazy though!

A quick side by side shows the flexplates are very similar, but the crank pattern is slightly different.

The engine plates dont interchange... crap! There goes my wishful thinking. . .

This brings back memories of a kid in my class at school (many, many moons ago) that his Grandpa gave him a 48 Pontiac with the Hydromatic that only had reverse that worked. He drafted me and another skinny 8th grader to help him take it out on Saturday. Since it still ran backwards we decided we might as well run it around Grandpa's pasture field to "warm it up"
We were surprised how fast that old sucker went in reverse, ended up we slid over a bank and it ended up right on the edge of a big woods with a really steep drop off. Scared the daylights out of us. When we jumped out the car it slid a little more, while we were planning what to do to get it back on solid ground, a little tree broke that had stopped us and the old Poncho rolled about a 100 feet down in the woods and stopped at a big assed tree on it's top. The only thing that really pissed his Grandpa off was we had taken the battery out of his tractor to get the car started and it didn't survive the crash. All three of us ended up working two Satrudays cleaning out his barn and pig pen to pay for the battery:(

Sorry guys ive been busy. No new news. I thought i had all the parts lined up, but the guy disappeared on me. I really dont want to pester him because he is going out of his way for me. Were under a few feet of snow now, its not junkyard weather.

Most likely i will have to wait till spring.

It'll be interesting to see how things turn out. Especially, if you go with a 302 GMC. That's what I'm considering for my 41 Streamliner.

Finally was able to get the parts engine. The bell on it is broke pretty good from all that monster GMC torque haha. So not only did the man cut his truck in half, and pull the motor BY HIMSELF, he gave it to me, then felt bad about the bell being broke so he took me to his house to GIVE me a good 235 bell!

I feel like i just robbed a bank...

What color is on that W engine? This summer my step daughter is going to learn to paint her first car (14 yrs old) and she wants it a blue.

That is actually just off the shelf Rustoleum. Metallic blue of some sort. I used the same color throughout the dash.

To be honest i wasn't super impressed with that 409. I ended up taking it out to do some work on it. Put a 283 in there in the mean time and loved it.

Well i put the car in the corner until i could collect more parts. Then got sidetracked with MINIs, jeeps, and square body chevys...

Today i brought home a huge piece of the puzzle.
