I posted this color picture I took at Dode Martins party some time back on the Cool Photo's thread and was told the car was originally a racer, not just lettered up. I was cleaning out pictures and realized I had what looks to be a B&W picture of the car back in it's racing days. IMG_1942.JPG srop_0206_01_z+1941_willy_coupe+side_view.jpg

    I should know who this is...but I don't.

    Gary Decker.jpg
Gary Decker from Kansas, at the Smoker's meet, I think that's Ed Taylor's steel Austin-bodied roadster behind it.

    rattrap.jpg
Don Green's Rat Trap Woody-built fuel altered before paint and chrome.

    moon-pictures-history-008.jpg
Dean Moon's sedan at Paradise Mesa. Dean worked in the Urich-Gibbs service department before starting Moon Equipment.

    speed sport roadster.jpg
The engine room of the Speed Sport Greth, Maynard, and Fisher roadster. This was apparently at a meet at Biloxi Dragway in Mississippi...the Speed Sport crew was not afraid to tow long distances.

Unknown Crosley-bodied altered, at San Luis Obispo, Karen White photo

    shubert4.jpg
Shubert & Herbert at Fontana, Zane in the middle.

    40 ford hood.jpg
Back when bodies were minimal, here just a '40 Ford deluxe hood. I found this on George Klass's site.

    Don't know whose this is.

    SanGabriel2.jpg
San Gabriel...sure looks like the Greek far side, but I don't remember that tall windscreen.

    heaven pacers.jpg
Heaven Pacers Fiat-bodied altered at Kingdon...these guys lived up to their name, used to conduct pre-race religious services at the strip where they raced.

Hiboy roadster leaves the Pomona starting line, 1954, photo from the Los Angeles Public Library

    sidewinder 5.jpg
Paul Nicolini sidewinder, Jack Chrisman rolls towards the Lions starting line. This car was very hard to beat when it ran gas, but a dose of fuel gave it too much horsepower and it started to plane at high speed.

    nichols2.jpg
Walt Nichols smokes off the line in the Nichols Brothers Olds-powered fueler. I probably posted this photo before, but it is a great photo, so here it is again...

I'm thinking that this roadster has done blowed up...

  10. Either it blew up, or that's all the paint coming off the hood.

  11. Looking at all the pieces flying under the car, I'd say it's in the process of blowing up.

I suspect this didn’t end well….but at-a-boy to driver, he’s still trying to drive it even with front wheels ~6’ off the ground.

As Mike notes, that was what he did for a living. He did the seat in my Don Long dragster along with hundreds of other race cars and hot rods. Read about him here; https://ahrf.com/pioneers/tony-nancy

Thanks, that was a good article. Didn't know he actually opened 2 shops. And worked so close with big names of the day. Like article says "born at the right time and place"
