Technical 36 axle with aluminium backing plates

Picked up a 36 fromt axle for the wishbone and it has aluminium backing plates ???

 

Wow that's rad. I've never seen that before

 

The brake cylinder is also aluminium

 

Can’t tell for sure but it looks like they were on ‘36 spindles. I imagine they were an early, aftermarket hydraulic conversion that was a direct bolt on.

 

I want those.

 

Was that out of a Right hand drive car or are the photos reversed?

Good catch. Interestingly a Google search shows a Norway based bicycle manufacturer named FARA that uses hydraulic disc brakes. Norway was RHD until 1962 when they switched sides. Coincidence, or ???

 

Makes those spindles a bit more valuable in the right hands. Now if you only had the steering gear box to go with it.

I will call the guy and see if the box is around, he bought a 40 chassis from another guy and that guy threw the front and rear end under it to roll it around. I bought the front and rear end from him for the wishbone , but had to take everything for , I want it out of my garage price

 

Right hand drive round spindles good for push pull steering in an early car without using a steering loop or 34 and earlier square spindles. Interesting.

I dont know. I feel like it would be just like using 34 and earlier left hand drive spindles? Except roundback. Interesting to think about. I've never had a set.

You are correct with the exception that you still would need the Bolt on steering loop. Connecting the Drag link as it sounded like you were referring to would not work. No leverage.

Gotcha. Another look and i see what you're saying.

 

Looks like one has a crack in it but could probably be welded.

 

Wow. I also found some aluminum backing plates with some early Ford stuff back in 08. Tried to have someone ID them here on the Hamb with no luck. They do look different then yours. Not in very good shape either.

 

They are a little different , do you still have them ?? Did you ever have spindles for them ?
Were they for right hand drive ??

 

They have to be either after market or later because Henry didn't switch to hydraulic brakes until 1939. If original to that 1936 axle even foreign they would have to be aftermarket.

 

I believe that they are aftermarket , but from where and who ? I will try a round back spindle in them tomorrow .

 

I still have them and up to now never saw another set. I didn't get any spindles with these.
