Technical ***January 2019 Banger Meet - New Banger Dreams***

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Jiminy, Jan 1, 2019.

  1. The B and 33/34 are the same, but the 33/34 brings the engine down, location wise.

As far as "tuning by ear" do I adjust the location of the rotor, or what?

    Timing noob over here..

  2. Let's see if I can explain this. Your B dist. doesn't turn at the base. There is a small adjustment near the cap but only a few degrees. Start by bringing number 1 cyl. up on the compression stroke and using the cover stop when the pin finds the detention. Remove the dist. cap and loosen the screw under the rotor. Then turn the cam ccw until the points are just ready to open on number 1 cyl. Tighten the screw, replace the rotor and cap. It should now run. Good luck.

easiest way to get it close is put your model A distributor body back on,pin ithe timing gear and set the rotor trailing corner across from the #1 pickup...then put your late model cap back on..using the A distributor body lets you see what your doing...

  4. So, got time in the garage today.

Started by measuring the difference in lifters tread diameter- relatively large difference!:

Tried with white board marker, pressure only by finger- not really impressed, but didn’t want to put valves and -spring back in.
Took a firmer look at the wear marks on the cam shaft, and based on those, concluded, that I’m not gonna get this set up.

So, I’ll try to order a set of ajustable lifters with larger tread diameter, before going further with this build (valve-wise at least).

Again, thanks a million for the inputs!

  5. Dannerr,

You can now see the issues with the small foot lifters, the wear marks on the larger ones show the needed foot dia.
We have been using Chrysler lifters which are 1.260 or about 32mm Ø
These require the block reamed to fit the increased size of stem and must check that the cam bearings do not interfere with the OD of the foot on lifter.

  7. Yes, the more I thougt about it, the more obvious it became- and seeing it in the block and on the workbench yesterday, just confirmed it. :)
Are the Chrystler lifters adjustable, and from where are they sold?

Again, thanks for your input, @johnneilson! If you hadn’t written aout it, I would just have put the smaller lifters in, and therby ruined the cam!

Speaking of cam, it is, as already mentioned, out of a G28T engine and is marked with an F- any one knows, what cam it is, that I’ve got?

I have some flathead Studebaker lifters , which I was told were/are the hot deal. I am proposing to use them in my new build.
I have yet to measure the foot diameter , but cannot get to the job until after this coming weekend. They look the part (bigger then stock Ford) , I already know they are slightly too big for the stock follower bore, hopefully that will just be big enough to cure any out of round in 80 year old blocks.

Rule of thumb is generally that the price of building a good four banger is usually the same as buying three SBC crate motors.

    Hello....
I haven’t posted in the Banger Meet before, lots of great info here. I’m working on a roadster. Diamond A block torn down and just got parts back from balance shop after counterweights added to crank. Working on exhaust. Need to get valve seats cut and assemble. Will keep posted on progress. 7732D6D7-E4BF-4FA0-8D92-ABFBD6F6CCA5.jpeg CB9E921A-B2C4-431A-9B33-A5BF94F59886.jpeg CF6B4DE3-F542-4FDE-9D0C-3F8884E15624.jpeg 906EE68B-02B6-4B13-B678-00C9F237D087.jpeg

Good to see that Felix will be resurrected. I love that little Jigger. I've just knocked two teeth out of the diff in my little RPU, on the way to throttle stomp at Bairnsdale. It was about 42degrees . Man, that was a trip in an open car! I was pretty near heat stroked.
