Wrote before about trying to locate secondary VIN on my Newport proj... the friend I traded from can't find the vin plate & paperwork for it; he & a few others had said 'driver side under the trunk lip weatherstripping' but no dice... A set of digits - MK plus three numbers - found near bottom slope towards the taillight... Has someone had similar search? Am I on the right track? The core support with a VIN card insert I have is from a different Chrys, '66 300. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Chrysler Historical may be of some help. In 1966 the VIN was on a tag in the left door jamb and no where else, if memory is correct. CA DMV might be able to tell you what you want to know, but why is that shit missing in the first place?
He received the car w VIN plate & paperwork in envelope. Came as part of a take-all deal for a runner Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The '65 had the front wrap of a '66 300 on it, I swapped wraps. I figure it was stripped of VIN in case itd be scrapped. Was becoming a parts car. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
There might be a Shipping Order number stamped on the rear where the bumper brackets attach. You will have to remove the bumper to find it, and it is not the VIN. Chrysler Historical can match that number to a VIN in some cases, but that may be 1966 up. Send a pm to Gimpys Hot Rods, he is really up on what you need in CA.
Thank you! Have not gotten a 2nd hand yet to remove backseat for any build sheet that might be in there still. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The back seat is easy for one guy.....one latch near the corner of the bench at floor level. Push fairly hard to the rear and lift at the same time. Repeat on other side. Until 1968 Mopar did not have a "VIN", just other various numbers and plates. I have used the body tag number/plate on the driver door jamb for an ID number when getting titles for pre-68 cars here in Oregun but in CA you need to provide whatever CA wants. Another vote for Gimpy as a resource.
Had a 1963 Dodge Max Wedge car. Still had the V.I.N. on the door post. Sent a pencil rubbing and some money to Chrysler Historical. Got a pretty nice packet back. Found out about the stamped numbers on the package shelf and the core support. They matched the order number on the IBM punch card that followed the car on the assy. line. They even sent a Photostat of that. Gene.
Nice! When I get back upstairs from the garage I'll show ya a picture of the one that came with the '66 300 front wrap, original owner address stamped on it and all. What & where is the Package Shelf?! Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The package shelf is the flat panel under the rear window that the back of the rear seat attaches to.
Oh- is the stamp on the interior side or trunk side? Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Pull the rear bumper and see if the SO number is stamped in the rear body crossmember, on the driver's side. CA DMV and/or CHP will want to see the serial number in TWO locations, factory stamped, or affixed. This is not negotiable. If you cannot find the paperwork, this is a "no records" car, and will need a VIN/Serial inspection by the DMV or CHP, and you will need to get a title bond.
After a Saturday coffe sesh in Arcata, got a lil help removing the seats (one of the rear doors is frozen shut), had to split before uncapping the shelf, but: build-sheet revealed. Love that stuff. Still gotta go at the rear bumper, at least got the cracked n dried-stuffing leaking seat halves out. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Its always fun to find those. My '66 Mercury had a rotten one underneath the rear carpet, and a virginal one taped to the right door trim pad.
Haven't got the rear bumper off yet, but this is the stamp I found on rear shelf: MK 3 17 stamped from underneath.... Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Not yet, haven't been back to it yet to remove back bumper... Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I brought my 64 300 home from N Cal and after months of exercising it's various demons, I drove it down to the local DMV for State Inspection. The VIN tag was still welded to the drivers door pillar but the inspector, who fancied himself King S@#t Of Turd Mountain, began to lecture me on how my car was potentially a fraud and may end up being impounded and destroyed. T Unlike most Chryslers, the 1964 Vin plates had locator holes drilled, then plates were spot welded in place on the drivers door pillar. The spot welds were clearly apparent. The King argued that "the drilled out rivets were the problem." I continued to explain that there were never any rivets installed and that the car was legit. He ignored me and said that "further, it appears as though someone haphazardly glued the VIN plate on with some kind of black adhesive". I tried to contain my laughter at this comedy of errors as I scraped off some of the "adhesive" with my fingernail and told him that the "adhesive" was in fact, 50 years of dirt. When he threatened to impound yet again, I got pissed. I told him that my car was legit and he'd better get to sorting it out. I finally pulled out a tool box and removed the passenger side front bucket seat. Once that was out of the way, the carpet could be lifted at the under seat seam and there was a matching VIN stamped on the floor of the car. I know that many 63's and 64's had a VIN stamp in this location. I cannot confirm that your 65 does, but it's probable. You could probably peer under there with the seat still in place with a flashlight.
Have not been able to do further VIN searching up at Arcata shop lately, but landlord said Has To Go from slumbering outside, brought it to the home driveway temporarily today (need to get current wheels in shop out). Found this # stamped in the upper cowl, over firewall, perhaps this the VIN.... 53629I2050.. JUST got it home, lookin under the carpet of passenger side front seat tomorrow... That is the shipping code from the build sheet. I'd think that the 204091 should be on the vin. Have you seen this link. http://www.degeneratepress.com/newport/vin66-74.htm Some more info to mess with your mind http://www.blackhillsmopars.org/files/pdf/1966to1980vindecoding.pdf
Got the bumper off today between rain systems... right side, #5462912058.... Yahtzee-maybe? Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Just realized that while it's 10 digits, this is identical # to what I found on firewall, and 1st 3 digits doesn't match the 1965 sequence gimpyshotrods shared with me... "6" would mean a '66, 5 doesn't fit in with first-digit codes.... arrrg... nothin was found on floorboards, btw. But at least that is ready for restoration, new insulation etc.. This fits the Shipping Order # scenario s55mercury66 brought up. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Get in touch with Chrysler Historical and see what they can come up with. They should have a copy of the shipping document with the VIN on it.
Beware SOME of the hidden vins do not have all the numbers in the public vin or some with more numbers, or NO letters added depending on the manufacturer.
