Am building my 47 Fleetline and the whole car is oxidized but the rear fenders are black. How can I get them to look like the rest of the car? Thinking of stripping the paint to metal and just leave them out side for a while.

Oxidized, do you mean rusty? Blast the body clean and paint it, then itll match.

Mark, I remember when the paint job and interior where the most important parts! 50 years ago when I first got into cars, anybody could burn the tires off but if it didn't look good doing it, nobody cared. Times have sure changed:confused: lol Larry

I couldn't agree more. When I started building hot rods over 40 years ago no one would be seen in a car with a shitty paint job. There is nothing traditional about a rusty finish on a car.

Coming from a young guy that can’t afford paint, I don’t understand having nice paint wishing it was in worse condition. All my cars are rusty wishing someday to be shiny.

If it's an original finish and just thin, I really like that look.
Shiny black rubbed through to red oxide is a favorite.
I've had lots of shiny cars and trucks over the years but they were a big expense and a lot of work to get there.
I have to admit, I drive my worn out paint cars much more often.
A base/clear paint job is pushing $1500 in topcoat materials alone if using a major brand.
I keep an open mind when trends come and go like patina finishes.
Just like flames and scallops, they all go away after a period of time .
Everyone's taste is gonna be different.

If it happens. Used to be new cars lost their shiny paint after a few years so nicely refinished old cars stood out. Now new car paint stays shiny forever with no upkeep, you need shitty paint to be different.

My heap is straight and all primer, hope to shoot it this spring in lacquer. But it's surprising, the GP all say don't paint it.

If it makes you feel any better I just paid my buffer guy (more than Gieco can save me in 15 minutes) after my upholsterer "dusted" my roadster with his sweat shirt sleeve for a month and a half.

Why not rub out the oxidized paint so it matches the fenders? Seems like less work to me.

Without pictures I'm assuming oxidized equals rust in this case.

    Yup.
Scallops and flames aren't popular right now.
I used to flame everything! Lol.
    Everything comes back around eventually.

“Patina” “rust” “antiqued” are all names for shit paint. This is a joke.

Primer.... flat black etc are fine
    Shiny paint is great
Original or good shape paint is awsome

I like how Mercedes and other high end car makers are offering flat black and other colours, wasn’t it a time when flat colours went on cause the body work was shit and the owner was waiting for time and money to make it shiny?
Now you can buy a $150,000 dollar ratrod !

A friend of mine had a new flat white pearl Harley. He got tired of me telling him they forget the clear coat.

  25. Think of them as having been added to the car due to collision damage or rust repair. Character that the car attained throughout it's lifespan. Buff and wax the rest of the car as best you can then it will be a survivor until you have enough money to get the entire car repainted. You could always tell people that and it would be better than faux.

One reason the truck won't go to an event until it is painted this time around. Some poor bastard that said "great rat rod" would cause me to spend the rest of my life in Walla Walla.

What's funny is if you actually look at old pics of early hot rods, most built by youngsters, most were lacking paint, shine, chrome. They were built to go fast not look pretty setting in a parking lot.

The few dollars they did have was spent on speed equipment not paint. Late 70`s when I was in high school the fastest cars were the roughest looking cars around, again the money was spent on cams, carbs, shifters, things that made the car faster and paint didn't make them faster, it just sucked money away from things that would.

The only "shiny", "pretty" early hot rods I remember were in hot rod magazine and car shows, basic trailer queens, the real cars that were getting thrashed on the streets? Paint was the least of their concerns.

  30. ..........I agree with a lot that you've said there, but I think most of us back then aspired to have our cars look good as well as run fast. It may not have always been accomplished, but we never really wanted them to look like shit.:(
