OK, granted I should know, but will a bad neutral safety switch cause a "no start" problem, or a "no crank" problem? Thanx for any input.
If the neutral safety switch won't complete the circuit in park or neutral, the engine won't crank. If it won't crank it won't start.
The neutral safety switch is typically wired in series with the starter wire that goes to the solenoid. The NSS is closed when in park or neutral for auto trans, or when clutch pedal is depressed for manual. If the switch is acting up it could be open and not allowing the starter wire to have voltage at the solenoid.
Thanx for the input, was trying to isolate the problem, 'cause sometimes it won't crank, and sometimes, it will crank, but won't start. Was wondering if the nuetral safety switch could be the problem. Guess I'll wire around it.
Take my advice DON"T by-pass the NSSW. I inadvertently by-passed mine by jumping the start solenoid. 3 fractures to my pelvis and a broken tailbone was the result. The Doctors told me the next day i was supposed to be dead. Treat the switch with a lot of respect.
Cranks but won't start sometimes sounds like a key switch that is not making connection all the time. Dirty contacts and wear will affect them. They do wear out....
A while ago we learned from Crazy Steve that some of us unwittingly put more current thru a key switch than it was designed to handle resulting in premature failure. I was guilty; mine failed. If you replace the key switch, consider using a relay to keep much of the electrical load off the key switch.
Donno Here is info I used to do it https://watsons-streetworks.com/a-current-topic/ Hope this helps Phil
