I've always wondered where the retread went. According to U-tires.com retreading tires is not automated and requires manual labor. The cost of new tires made through robotics creates a marginal cost difference.
U-tires dot com appears to be a website for independent tire dealers explaining how they can work successfully within the tire market in the 80's and may not be the best authority for this topic. Isn't it interesting from this point of view that automation makes a throw away product mare advantageous than recycling.

Yes it looks like there is a guide fixture temporarily attached to the side of the body to give him a guide.

Yes, the guide clamps on the car and he uses a Beugler type tool to apply the paint, a striping wheel, some would put down two lines at once.

This photo brings back lots of memories from the last 71 years. The car farthest car from the photographer in front of that large building is the starting line for the HOT ROD HILL CLIMB in Central City Colorado, When I was young the Toll Gate bar was a 3.2 bar and you could drink 3.2 beer at 18 years of age. I knew that place well, 4 or 5 guys racing back to Denver on motorcycles after a few hours in there was thrilling. Thought at the time I was a talented rider now I realize I was a very lucky rider.
