Hot Rods Another metal casting adventure...in honour of Mr Mcgurk

Nice work,I've done some mold an casting. It's the hard way,but dose have a cool look. Over the years though most of my homemade intake or Ex header play has been steel tubing. The last alum castings I did was in the 1970s for toy trains.

 

Outstanding! I love how you are never afraid to try anything.

 

It's not that I'm particularly courageous.....I'm dumb enough to not know what I can't do

I spent over 25 yrs. in a cast iron foundry in Upstate N.Y. so any time something like this comes up, you know I Love it. Never involved in the molding, but did everything else. Utility man, furnace operator, pour off , shake out, testing and alloying metal, you name it. Stuck around long enough that I was made leader of the Melt Dept. They are still in business, even without me (been gone 20 yrs.)! What's next, Jeff?

 

what are you using for the furnace? I am in the process of building one . I am having trouble finding the correct refractory cement.

 

I was a patternmaker for 30+ years. Looks like you are on the right track. Just don't forget to allow for shrinkage....

 

I also use petrobond sand and had that issue with small pin holes on the surface once. I attributed it to getting my aluminum way too hot. Since then I keep an eye on my temperature and try to pour aluminum at about 1300 degrees, haven't seen the problem since. I don't and have never used anything for degassing. Really cool and clever designs you got there. I love it.

 

I just wanted to throw this out there for those who might have some ambition to attempt casting. What I use for a furnace is a regular old electric ceramic kiln. I started with the old charcoal furnace deal that you will see in the online videos but quickly outgrew that method. You can find the kilns on CL many times for only a few hundred bucks. These kilns can be upgraded for digital temp controls but I use a handheld pyrometer. Where it gets pricey and becomes more of a commitment is conditioning the sand, to do so (with petrobond at least) requires a sand muller. They can be found used if you look hard enough but new cost a few grand.

 

very interested in your casting tread. This is what i am building ,propane fueled. supposed to be able to melt 8 pounds of cast iron,
I will work with aluminum.

 

What's next?.....I have a welded quick change that I have been neglecting for several years.

The stuff I used was called Cercast3000 from Vesuvius industries. I got it from a building supply place that specializes in masonry supplies

I took up aluminum casting in high school. My 'student-teacher' was the remarkable LSR holder Dick Beith, who started E-T Mags! (Luck of the Irish...)
Shrinkage was an 'in my face' lesson with the first MOON foot pedals I 'bootlegged'...
My original fit my size 10 Engineer boot perfect. The ones I cast were about a size 9-1/2!
(actually, the original pedal would accommodate a size 11 oxford shoe...) my original Moon will take a 12 with a Sperry Topsider!
Aluminum casting is the Wizardry of hot rodding. Then and now.
Kudos to Jeff, his work is amazing.

 

No those are cast iron originals , but that sounds like another idea ....the future projects are stacking up!

and kids didn't mind getting their hands dirty.?
It's a great feeling of accomplishment to create and make your own stuff.
