Clayton ohh...... Clayton, you have set my "T" cogs turning,
I though I was done but......now I'm looking to start all over again.

 

I'm in. Love the photoshop concept.

 

The early ones may have been, but I have never seen a pair. The Feneral Moguls are quite unique.

 

How could you be? Nobody is ever truly "done"...

 

Those look like a great CNC project for someone.

We thought about that....but it would make for a substantial loss in material.

Casting new ones would have the right look and would be fairly straightforward.

 

The issues I have run into with the engine now is main caps.

The engine I have was originally built by Amocat in the Seattle area around 2007 or 2008 for a nice prewar ’29 Roadster. The engine was never completed and then robbed for parts to get another Nice LB together for a show deadline. After Amocat closed, the engine went to a friend of mine and sat in his shop for 10 years. In that decade…..the already checked and line-bored main caps have vanished.

I bought another set of caps and took the whole mess to my machine shop. They told me the caps I bought are off just enough to make them not useable.

I ultimately need to find the mains for this particular block (they have yet to surface), but I’m also trying to find a few more set of caps so that I can take a box full to the machine shop and say ‘Here…..find a set that fits” as a backup.


I have three sets as we speak, but would like to scrounge up a few more. Anyone in HAMB land holding?

Late-1936 to early-1938 21-stud with 2.399” insert main bearing caps.







I of course don’t need to keep all these sets, I just need enough stock to find a good set and return the rest…and square up on the set I need.


I also need an early 21A cam, so I can have it reground as a Winfield 3/4…..unless someone has an original early flathead Winfield ¾ !

Weekly Update!

Not a hell of a lot to report this week, but I did get some work done on the transmission. I got the case painted up in old Ford Green..






And I got the inside coated with Glyptal.









I also have my gear sets all ready to go and received my parts order of bearings, small parts, snap rings and bushings from VanPelts.





Now, time to assemble! I have a few of these boxes to do, so I’m gonna do them all on the same weekend. I will do a big post on the assembly process when we get to it.

Glyptal. its a oil resistant protective coating for cast parts....commonly used on engines, transmissions and rear axles.

Trans case looks great! I'm interested in the mount you have rigged up in the vice. Trying to figure it out but can't see the other side. Looks handy for transmission work.

 

Its a piece of 1" Steel plumbing pipe (about 8" long) welded to a piece of 2"x2" steel angle (about 12" long). Its a concept I barrowed from Vern Tardel...works great! I'll get some better pics tonight.

 

If you are interested I can offer advice on how to eject the cluster gear out the bottom on those transmissions. One word of caution...try and keep the end play on the cluster at the minimums, it helps to keep things in one piece.

 

That is a very good point. All the gearboxes I have a all pretty nice and were tight when I pulled them apart. have all new parts and nice gears. I will be checking that though..

 

I broke a few of those when they were plentiful and I had an Olds in my '38 Coupe. I guess I should have shimmed the cluster gear.

 

The best one I ever did, I blew the cluster out the bottom and ate the ring and pinion in the rear end at the same time. '41 Mercury 4dr with a built flathead street racing. Those were some fun days.

 

Sheared a key in the hud and before I got my foot out, thought I was smoking' 'em for a second or two, the hub seized to the axle creating new traction and blew the cluster out the bottom. My whole high school was watching. I didn't need those 8" slicks.

Thanks for the post. I love the fact that you are using vintage parts. I have an old t bucket brass 4 core radiator (small block chevy) sitting on the shelf just waiting to be made into a car.....I appreciate the inspiration. Gary

 

So where are the "weekly updates"?

 

I know.....I kinda suck. There just hasn't been much going as I have been trying to get some other projects done so that I can start in earnest.

 

That said, I do have some minor updates.

I made a trip back to the Estate where the Bronze heads came from and bought some more goodies. The prices were right and it was a smart move. Here is what I picked up:

I also scored this NOS Lucas Flathead Magneto..







Some of this stuff will probably go away to finance the project.

The one thing I plan to keep however is this.....a 1940-'41 Lincoln Zephyr transmission.


I cracked it open to find a really nice box.......except for a single broken tooth on the cluster gear....



So now I'm on the hunt for a replacement Cluster Gear. The ratio is the 26-22-18-14....anyone holding?

New Update!

Finally had a chance between three trips this month to make a little progress on the new Roadster.

As you may remember, I had acquired a '40-'41 Lincoln Zephyr transmission that ended up having a busted cluster gear.

I went on a search for an original 26-tooth Lincoln cluster, but came up empty handed. I made a call to Mac Vanpelt and got the scoop on the new repop cluster gears. He said that originally, they were not very good quality wise, but after a redesign they were lightyears better and of far superior quality. I buckled down and purchased one.

Now that I have everything I can do some test fitting in the case to check gaps, fit and clearance.

Then....it will be time to assemble.

I will get some photos uploaded tomorrow. For some reason, my phone won't let me upload anything.

Is Mac telling you that the new repop clusters are better than the early repop ones or than the originals? Just curious. Did the early ones break teeth?
