I have been doing my due diligence as my ideal build would be a sweet 292 Ford V8 in my 40 ford pickup. It appears that there a few ford on ford power plants but the bulk of the engines in these rods appear to be "other" to me. I have the truck, I have the motor and I have the motivation. I am just looking for a build thread or someone who has walked the path as I have a few questions. The fabrication doesn't scare me. I get the firewall recess and the pan issues but even after buying and reading the 56 Hot Rod magazine article of the swap I am wondering if I should hold the line or cave and stick a 327 or something else in the thing. Advice appreciated!

I don’t know enough about 35’s or 40’s to know what if anything they have in common. But Rono over on the yblocksforever site has a blown y in a 35. He’s over in Meridian, just west of Boise ID.
    http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Topic80684-1.aspx

    I’ve got an F code y in my 32.

There’s a Yblock build or two on here also. Go for it

Go with the y block, be different!

Fabrication is fabrication, doesn’t matter what engine you put in what if it’s not stock you’ll need to make it fit.

Anything will fit with a torch, a sawzall and a big enough hammer! My vote is definitely for the Y. I’m running a .40 over 292. I love it.

  6. Go for the Y-block; it may be a little more work but you'll be happier in the long run if it's what you truly want. Just follow the A.B.C.'s of hot rodding...

My goal is to end up with a build like someone would do in southern California in the late 50's or early 60's. I know what that is. Fabrication is fabrication and it is what have done for a living so I will auger on for the time being. I don't want another clone magazine build. I am perfectly happy when I get what I want when I want it:)

When I bought my 32 it had been running a Y block. The PO had cut the tubular engine mount crossmember from a donater car and welded it to the 32 frame. Another guy did the same thing when he put a 292 in a 53 Merc. Don't know why more people don't do that.

  9. I did that when I put a Y-block in a '35 Chev. sedan back in the day; never got it finished but surprisingly it fit quite well.

That era more often then not would of had a SBC ....and they fit perfect, same size as a Flathead , with a hurst mount you could bolt in a sbc and next weekend bolt a flattie back in it , if you wanted...and nobody would ever know , I know a lot of early ford guys who prefer this motor swap as it means your not molesting the car usally

As a die hard Chevy guy drives a 327 as his daily driver I say go for the Y block. We have enough 327’s in hot rods. Plus the Y block just looks good!

Definitely go with the y-block. I know it's cheaper and easier to follow the crowd into brand X belly-button land but the y-block would be so much cooler.

Check out April 1961-July 1961 Rod and Custom Magazine. Even shows how to make motor mounts and firewall mods.

I like that a lot! I have both the Y-Block referenced in my OP and also have picked up an early 5 liter. I will look at both but even after reading the "build a Y-Block" book and knowing the expense will be greater I am still leaning toward the Y-Block for my build. I need to fine a machinist knowledgeable about these motors.

Your truck has a big engine bay, fill it proudly. That Y block may be more work but worth it in my opinion.

With that said, I believe there was a thread here about someone putting a Y Block in a 36-40 chassis

Y block and FEs frame mounts are almost the same so speedways tube FE cross member might be the answer.

    I had a 55 F 100 with a 59 292 the had 312 T bird heads, intake and isky supercharger cam with a holly 600 cam, holly 600 cam four barrel.
It had F600 ramhorm exhust, turbos and a mallory 4 lobe distrubtor. It ran fine. You couldn’t ask for a better motor. I commuted between Reno and Carson City for years. Got good gas mileage and I figured I put 160,000 miles on it with
Cam II 20-50 oil. (Harley 20-50).
I started with a 3 speed and went to a 4 speed. I could haul ass or pull a car trailer. I wish I still had it.

Today I took advantage of the warm weather and degreased and pressure washed my 64 truck 292 y-block for my 40 build. I have to build a cradle for it and get it home. 291-2.jpg 292-1.jpg 292-3.jpg

Do a search on here for Elpolacko's 37 Ford pickup build. He had a fellow hamber that wanted a Y block in a survivor truck he found. It was a lot of work, but really neat when he got finished. I'll look for the link tonight when I get home.

Yeah, I ordered the April and July Rod & Custom last night, should be here by the first week of January.
Also bought a Millermatic 211 with all options including spool gun today. Should do anything I want to do.

I vote for the Ford too!
My only question is...why the fascination with the old Y block? I 'm kinda new to this site and I know its a lot about the old stuff and retro rods...and I like that but......
SBF engines are sooo much more plentiful/cheaper/more parts available/more powerful.....on and on.
Just ask'in.....not wanting a sh-- storm thrown my way!

Because the y block build is seriously cool. I do have an early 5 liter ford in reserve in case my y block is not usable.
