Those turned out really nice. What are they made out of??? I would be painting the walls & ceiling white next before you fill it up to much. Will make a huge difference in being able to see what you are doing.

When I was growing up our house had a coal fired gravity furnace and a coal burning water heater. From age 7 till we got natural gas when I in high school that fire was my responsibility. Stoking it, adjusting the damper, shaking down the grate, hauling ashes, banking it if we went away for the weekend. I also had to go to my grand mother's house to bring up coal from the cellar and haul her ashes from the pot belly in the parlor and the coal fired cook stove in the kitchen.

I was a happy camper when the gas was installed on our road and the new water heater appeared. Grams eventually went to oil heat but kept the kitchen stove for many years.
Can't complain about the heat coal produce but is certainly is much more hands on than modern systems.

Sorry to hijack, but wanted to share my lucky score too.
The BNGR spent it's first couple winters in a Quonset tent in the backyard.
A local non-profit was raffling a new timber frame.
I bought 30 tickets for $200...less than 500 tickets were sold...I figured pretty fair odds, eh?

They were...I won it...friends delivered it...I assembled the 3 "bents" on the flat, and they
all came back to help raise it. I added siding, roofing and a ramp, and have been outa
the weather for 8 years now. It's tight, but it's dry, and A-bones are small.

Might want to look into LED lighting. I think they make them for eight footers now.. Wow what a difference. Get the daylight or warm white, the cool white is too blue..

I started to bring over some stuff to decorate a bit. Brough over an old pop machine that works well for beer, and hung some signs. I also drug over my old hand crank drill and anvil.

That coal and garage reminds me of my childhood, my dad used to rent a garage with those blocks.. He used to keep his 51 Ford in there.. I wish I could smell that coal. We had a Hercules coal furnace and my job was to fill the coal bin up. They delivered the coal on our sidewalk and I had to wheel barrel the coal to the shoot between our houses. This is on Fisk street in Pittsburgh (Lawrenceville).. I had a wonderful childhood growing up in the sixty's and having my father as my hero..

  13. Elcohaulic, come on down to Wild Wonderful WV anytime in the winter as I burn it in my outdoor heater to supply hot water heat the house and two story garage and I'm just South of Wheeling. fordf1trknut if you bank it like I said then shut the upper draft completely, very slightly open the bottom draft and almost shut your flue it should retain the heat all night. This will make it easier to get it kicking in the morning and keep the garage just above freezing when you aren't there. My outdoor burner is automatic. When the water temperature drops the door is opened and fan kicked on to heat the water back to temperature then shuts back down. When it is up to temperature ot is shut down and just smolders. Everything there is looking good there.

  16. Most Definitely! I have 31 8ft dual bulb fixtures in my shop. I converted all of them to LED. 36 watt
6500k lumen in the main part of the buliding & 48 watt 6500 lumen in the paint booth/room. Amazing how much brighter, especially since the inside of the building is all "bright white" metal.

    God Bless & Merry Christmas

Nice, I use to rent a 4000sqft shop with a buddy in the UK. It was great having the space. Was 15 minutes from home and there were a few mechanics with units next to us. Officially ours was just for storage so that we didnt have to pay commercial taxes.

I believe I know that shop! As a kid, I used to work in Somerset at the old car wash that was right off the turnpike!
